TUCSON, Ariz. – Utah's
Sedrick Barefield and
Donnie Tillman both tallied 20-point efforts for a second-consecutive game, but this time it was not enough as the Runnin' Utes (7-7, 1-0 Pac-12) fell 84-81 to the Arizona Wildcats (11-4, 2-0 Pac-12) in overtime Saturday afternoon at the McKale Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Utah led by as many as 10 points in the first half and then trailed as many as six points in the second half, but still managed to take Arizona to overtime when both teams were all tied 72-72 at the end of regulation. Both teams combined for just two field goals (one each) in the final 4:26 of the second half, but Utah's six-point lead dwindled as the Wildcats managed to make 6-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch.
UA opened the overtime period with just one field, but were 4-of-6 from the charity stripe, giving the home squad a 78-74 lead.
Parker Van Dyke cut the deficit to one with a three-pointer and
Timmy Allen tied it with a free throw, but Utah was unable to get a point following Tillman's old-fashioned three-point-play that gave Utah an 81-80 lead. Arizona followed with a bucket at the other end and later made a pair of free throws with 1.4 seconds left to seal the win.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Barefield scored a team-high 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting overall and was 5-fo-9 from downtown, but the senior fouled out with 1:44 left to play in regulation. This marked the third straight 20-plus-point game for Barefield, who has tallied 33 points, 24 points and now 26 points, respectively.
Tillman, who is coming off a career-high 22 points at Arizona State, scored 21 points on Saturday, shooting 7-of-10 from the field and a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range. Both Tillman and Barefield led the team with four assists each.
