SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah women's tennis program gets the 2019 season underway this Saturday when they take on Texas A&M in Newport Beach, Calif.
The match will take place at the famous Palisades Club in Newport Beach with a start time of 12 p.m. MT. Fans can follow along with the action on Twitter (@UteWomensTennis) with a full set of results and a recap available on UtahUtes.com after the match has concluded.
Head coach Mat Iandolo is in his 12th year at the helm after the Utes put together another successful season in 2018. With 10 dual wins, an all-conference performer, six all-academic nods and three ITA Scholar-Athletes, the Utes are looking to continue the momentum upward in the Pac-12 and Mountain Region.
The Utes will bring a healthy combination of veteran experience and talented newcomers to the court this season, led by seniors Brianna Chisholm and Taylor Calton. Chisholm was solid at the No. 2 spot for the Utes last season with eight singles wins, also coming away with Pac-12 All-Academic first-team honors, a spot on the ITA Scholar-Athlete team and the ITA Mountain Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award away from the court.
Calton finished last season 8-7 in singles play, starting her season on a five-match win streak, while also playing at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in doubles with Whitney Hekking. The duo finished with eight wins, including five straight to start the season.
Hekking put together a strong sophomore season in 2018, grabbing seven wins on the court while also getting recognized off the court. She was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic second-team and earned ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Utah fans will also get to see Leah Heimuli and Jasmine Rich this season after they both redshirted last year. Heimuli was an All-American at BYU-Hawaii before coming to Salt Lake City, also earning ITA Rookie of the Year in 2017 while Rich played her high school days at East High School.
The Utes signed four newcomers to the roster for this season as well with Emily Dush (four-star recruit), Lindsay Hung (five-star recruit), Anya Lamoreaux (four-star recruit) and Madison Tattini (five-star recruit), who all had strong fall seasons and are eager to get on the court once again in a Utah uniform.
