SAN FRANCISCO – The 2020 Utah gymnastics schedule was released today by the Pac-12 Conference, highlighted by competing at two local podium events and opening the regular season against an SEC program for the first time since 2008. This year's schedule also includes four-of-five regular season home meets being held on fan-favorite Friday nights.
Including the Red Rocks Preview on Friday, Dec. 13, Utah will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks six times during the season, while the meet against UCLA in Los Angeles will air live on ESPN2. In addition, all Utah home meets and postseason competitions will be broadcast live on ESPN 700 radio.
"This schedule has all the necessary components to put our team in a great position to return to the NCAA Championships," said head coach
Tom Farden. "We are thrilled at the opportunity to add the Best of Utah NCAA Gymnastics meet to our schedule and give our student-athletes the chance to compete on podium before the postseason, as well as give our fans an additional chance to see high-level gymnastics in a championship setting that the Maverik Center provides. We are also ecstatic to bring back Friday night home meets that will continue our tradition of electric atmospheres and capacity crowds at the Huntsman Center."
Utah will open the regular season against a rising SEC gymnastics program when the Utes welcome Kentucky to the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Friday, Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. The dual meet between Utah and Kentucky will be just the second ever meeting between the two programs with the first meeting coming in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships in 2018. Kentucky finished this past season ranked ninth in the nation.
Utah will have the opportunity to compete on podium twice this year with both events taking place locally at the Maverik Center in West Valley City. Maverik Center and Utah's four NCAA Women's Gymnastics programs – Utah, BYU, Southern Utah, and Utah State – have partnered together to compete at the Best of Utah NCAA Gymnastics meet. The inaugural meet of the five-year contract will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11.
The partnership marks the first time that the four schools will compete against each other in the same venue on a raised, podium floor, and gives the schools the opportunity to compete in a championship setting before they enter the postseason. The only other time Utah's four in-state teams have met was in 1993 in the Smith's Cup Challenge where Utah went on to win the quad-meet.
The Utes will also compete on podium at the Pac-12 Championships. In its second year as a podium event at the Maverik Center, the conference championships will be held on Saturday, March 21.
New to the Pac-12 Conference in 2020, the eight Pac-12 gymnastics programs are required to have dual meets against all conference members during the regular season, which will allow for a regular season champion to be crowned. Along with the Pac-12 gymnastics regular season title, the winning team at the Pac-12 Championships will be crowned as the Pac-12 Champions.
This year's Pac-12 slate for Utah is highlighted by dual meets against UCLA and Oregon State, who placed third and sixth, respectively, at the 2019 NCAA Championships. The Beavers will travel to Salt Lake City for the meet with the Utes on Saturday, Feb. 15 in a matinee showdown at 1 p.m. The Red Rocks will then hit the road the following week to take on UCLA at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday, Feb. 23. The meet between the Utes and Bruins will air on ESPN2 at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT.
Including Oregon State in mid-February, Utah will have home conference meets against Arizona State (Jan. 24) and Stanford (March 6). Along with UCLA, Utah will travel to Arizona (Feb. 1), California (Feb. 8), and Washington (March 1) for this season's conference road slate.
Due to scheduling conflicts, Utah and Georgia were not able to meet this season as previously planned. However, the Red Rocks will now welcome Utah State for senior night on Friday, March 13. Utah and Utah State have not met since the NCAA Regional in 2016, while the two teams have not had a regular season meeting since the 2012 season.
In the second year of the new NCAA postseason format, the six-team, three-day NCAA Regionals will take place Thursday-Saturday, April 2-4. The first day of regionals is a dual meet "play in" with the winning team joining seven automatic qualifiers in the second round on April 3. The top-two teams from each second-round semifinal will advance to the regional final on April 4. The sites for the NCAA Regionals this year are at Oklahoma, Denver, Penn State, and UCLA.
The advancing eight teams will compete at the 2020 NCAA Championships on Friday and Saturday, April 17-18. The semifinals will be held on Friday, while the top-two teams from each session will advance to the NCAA finals on Saturday. The NCAA finals have been picked up by ABC and will be broadcast live from the brand new Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Dickies Arena will celebrate its grand opening this fall and will serve as the NCAA Gymnastics Championship host site for the next three seasons.
