Utah Football Posts Gritty 21-3 Win Over Arizona State

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah football team came away with a gritty win over the No. 17 Arizona State Sun Devils on a rainy Saturday, winning 21-3 to improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Pac-12 play.
The Utes defense was outstanding in today's top 20 battle, holding Arizona State to 136 yards of total offense, including keeping the Sun Devil quarterback to just 25 passing yards. Utah finished the game with an interception, a forced fumble and three sacks to hold the Sun Devils to their lowest point total of the season.
On offense, Zack Moss made history with his 25 carries for 99 rushing yards and two touchdowns, breaking the school record in career rushing yards (3,264) while also tying the program record in career rushing touchdowns at 31. He also had a career high 78 receiving yards on three catches to give him 177 all-purpose yards.
Tyler Huntley finished the game 12-of-19 passing (0 TD, 0 INT) for 171 yards, adding 32 rushing yards on four carries. He moved into fifth all-time in career passing yards with 5,823 yards through 30 career games.
On defense, Devin Lloyd recorded eight tackles to lead the team, adding a pass breakup. John Penisini put up six tackles, including a tackles for loss and a pass breakup with Julian Blackmon and Terrell Burgess notching five tackles each with Blackmon forcing a fumble as well.
Bradlee Anae had three tackles on the game with all three coming in the form of sacks to give him 24 career sacks. He now ranks seventh all-time in program history.
After turnovers plagued the Utah offense in the first quarter, the Utes jumped on the scoreboard to take a 7-0 lead with 8:59 left to play in the second. At the end of a 60-play drive, Jaylen Dixon dove across the pylon for a 10-yard rushing touchdown to give Utah the seven-point advantage.
The Utes took a 14-0 lead in a drive that was emblazoned with defensive penalties and injuries, but Utah was able to push through and score on a one-yard rushing touchdown with 1:08 remaining in the second quarter. Utah drove 73 yards down field with both Moss and Huntley having to leave the field for injuries before returning to finish the drive with Moss's seventh rushing score of the year.
The Utah defense was smothering in the first half, holding Arizona State to just 42 yards of total offense and two first downs. The Utes kept the Sun Devils to 15 passing yards in the first two quarters, ending the half with an interception by Tareke Lewis.
After the Utes turned the ball over on a fumble on their own 15-yard-line, the Utah defense put up another strong stand, holding the Sun Devils to a 40-yard field goal. The field goal cut the Utah lead to 14-3 with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter, ending a four-play, minus four-yard drive that burned 2:08 off the clock.
The Utah defense continued to put up stand after stand, even forcing a missed field goal with Moss putting the exclamation point on the game at the 5:24 mark in the fourth quarter. Moss broke free for a 32-yard touchdown to break the school record in career rushing yards and tie the record for career rushing touchdowns, putting the Utes up 21-3.
The Utes were able to force Arizona State to turn the ball over on downs on the next drive, followed by running the clock out on offense for the win.
Utah returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 when they host the California Golden Bears. The game is set for an 8 p.m. MT kick on FS1.
