CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Utah men's basketball team returned to form Friday night as it defeated Ohio on day two of the Myrtle Beach Invitational in the HTC Center behind four players scoring in double-figures.
The Utah (4-1) offense was more like what fans were accustomed to as it took an early 9-7 lead over Ohio after converting four of its first five field-goal attempts – including a one-handed jam from
Branden Carlson. A game of runs then ensued with the Bobcats answering Utah's 6-0 run to the start the game with an 11-2 run of their own to take a 14-11 lead over the Utes.
Out of the under-12 media timeout with 10:31 on the clock, both teams got hot with Utah shooting 6-of-8 from the floor while Ohio (3-3) went 5-of-7 from the floor. Holding a narrow 28-26 lead at the 6:16 mark, a 6-0 spurt from the U out of the break forced Ohio to call a timeout just a 1:41 in after resuming play.
The game of runs, this time in favor of the Utes, culminated in a 41-26 lead for Utah thanks to a 13-0 scoring spree that held the Bobcats scoreless for 4:44 minutes of action. A late foul gave Ohio three more points, but it was that big run late in the first half that gave Utah the 44-34 advantage at the half.
The offense continued to flow well at the start of the second frame, hitting 5-of-7 shots from the floor to extend its lead to 55-38 out of the media break when
Timmy Allen completed the 3-point play. Utah continued to extend that lead with 11:38 left in the game after
Rylan Jones banged in back-to-back threes for the 63-44 edge.
Ohio cut the lead down to 10 twice with less than two minutes left to play, but the Utes would not be denied and pushed its lead back up to 16 points before settling for the 80-66 victory.
Allen finished with a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds while
Both Gach posted 18 points. Meanwhile, Jones had a season-high 17 points with four assists and three rebounds to go with
Riley Battin's 10 points and seven rebounds.
BY THE NUMBERS
Utah had a great night at the line, hitting 27-of-28 shots after going 14-of-25 last night against Coastal Carolina … the last time the Utes made 25-plus free throws was at Colorado (2/23/17) when it hit 25 … it is the second time in three games that Utah has had four players in double-figures … Utah is now 2-0 against the Bobcats.

Opening Statement…
"It was ugly last night. We broke down the film and we were deficient in a lot of different areas. I thought we bounced back really well. We came out with a great focus, we played hard and we shared the basketball. It was good to get a win. It's a tough environment and I was proud of our guys. We guarded and shared and didn't have a high turnover total."
On hitting 27-of-28 free throws…
"That was great. They're called free for a reason and often times they get overlooked. It's not the fact that you make most of them, it's the one-and-ones. Those little things add up and 27 points is remarkable for our guys."
