SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 16 Utah volleyball team fought the entire match, but No. 4 Stanford was too strong in the Huntsman Center taking down the Utes 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 14-25).
Dani Drews had a match-high 26 kills on the night and
Brianna Doehrmann led the way with 21 digs. She moved into second place in the Utah volleyball record books for career digs after her 10
th of the match and is now 26 digs away from becoming the program leader in career digs.
Utah came out swinging in the first set going up 13-10 after a 5-1 run. They extended their lead to five up 17-12 after three straight kills from Drews. Stanford tightened things up getting back within one, but the Utes pulled out the first set 25-23.
The Utes rode the momentum they had in the first set and jumped out to a 7-2 lead forcing the Cardinal to take a timeout. Utah held their lead until Stanford came back and tied things up at 19. After the Utes edged back out in front by one, the Cardinal went on a 5-0 run and evened things up at one set apiece.
In the third set, Utah found themselves in a four-point hole, but came back to tie things up at 16. From there, the Utes had four leads, but Stanford took a slight lead late. Trailing by one, Berkley Oblad got a kill to tie things up at 23, but the Cardinal won the final two points to take a 2-1 lead.
With a chance to close things out in four, Stanford stepped up to take the match.
The loss drops Utah's record to 19-9 and 11-6 in the Pac-12.
Oblad finished with 10 kills hitting .308 while also having 6.0 blocks.
Zoe Weatherington was the third player with double-figure kills at 10.
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres had 45 assists and 12 digs.
Utah will be back on the court in the Huntsman Center this Sunday against Cal for a 12 p.m. match on the Pac-12 Networks.
