SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 16 Utah volleyball team earned a weekend split after taking down No. 24 Cal 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-16, 25-20) on Sunday in the Huntsman Center.
Kenzie Koerber was fantastic matching a career high with 19 kills while hitting .436 and also had nine digs and 6.0 blocks to go along with two service aces.
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres had 48 assists and 10 digs.
After dropping the second set, Utah handled their business taking comfortable leads in the third and fourth set to clinch their 20
th win of the season. This is head coach
Beth Launiere's 18
th 20-win season.
With things tied at seven, Utah went on an 8-1 run in the first to take control going up 15-8. Cal didn't have much luck after that trying to get back into the set as the Utes cruised to a nine-point first-set win.
After dropping the second set, Utah came out of the locker room ready to go. With a 13-11 lead, the Utes ran off four straight to go up 16-11. After a couple of points that Cal won, Utah slammed the door on any comeback attempt winning six in a row. The deficit was too much for the Golden Bears as the Utes claimed the third set 25-16.
With things tight early in the fourth, Utah went on another big run. This time they won seven straight points to go up 14-9. Cal did pull it back to one later in the set forcing Utah to take a timeout, but they responded by pushing their lead back to as big as eight.
The win moves Utah to 20-9 on the season and 12-6 in the Pac-12. With two matches left, they are one win away from matching their highest Pac-12-win total of 13 back in 2017.
Dani Drews totaled 16 kills and 12 digs to go along with 5.0 blocks.
Brianna Doehrmann had nine digs on the night leaving her just 17 digs away from breaking the program record for career digs.
Utah has one match in the regular season left at home and it comes this Wednesday, November 27 at 4 p.m. against Oregon State. The Utes will be celebrating
