TEMPE, Ariz. - Utah Softball concluded a successful first weekend with a 2-1 win over Bradley this afternoon.
Sydney Sandez earned her first collegiate win with a complete game victory for the Utes. She allowed just one run, in the final inning, on four hits.
Utah started well against the Braves, putting a pair of runners on to begin the game.
Julia Noskin singled,
Alyssa Barrera walked and
Makayla Hurst slapped a two-out RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Barrera was a pest all weekend, reaching base in every game for the Utes.Â
Sandez got out of a sticky situation in the second as Bradley put runners at second and third to begin the frame. She was able to get a strikeout and on a tapper in front of the plate,
Katie Faulk alertly threw behind the runner at second to get an out. A soft liner to
BreOnna Castaneda killed off the rally.
In the fourth, Hurst singled again, but was erased on a fielder's choice.
Abby Robertson, who had reached base on the play, was then able to get around to third on a combination of aggressive running and a bad throw from the pitcher. It paid off as the sophomore scored on a grounder by
Jordyn Gasper.
Utah threatened in the sixth but was unable to tack on any insurance runs. It almost proved costly as Bradley got on the board in the seventh with a Samantha Smith sacrifice fly but the Utes held on again to cap their fourth win in five contests.
It was a balanced offensive performance by the club as 10 different players registered hits, scored and drove in runs.
Utah will travel to Florida next weekend for the St. Pete Clearwater Elite Invitational presented by Wilson. They open with a doubleheader on Friday against No. 13 Kentucky and No. 22 Oklahoma State starting at 3 p.m. ET
