INDIANAPOLIS—The NCAA announced the regional gymnastics fields today and Utah is the No. 2 seed in the Baton Rouge Regional. The Utes will move right into the NCAA Second Round, competing on Friday, Apr. 5 in the 2 p.m. CT (1 p.m. MT) semifinal. Utah must place in the top two of its semifinal to qualify into the Regional Final on Saturday, Apr. 6 at 7 p.m. CT (6 p.m. MT).
Â
Teams were placed in regions and brackets according to their national ranking. Competing against No. 6 Utah in the Baton Rouge Regional afternoon semifinal on Apr. 5 are No. 11 Minnesota, BYU and Arkansas. Competing in the evening session is top seed and No. 3-ranked LSU, No. 14 Auburn, Arizona State and the winner of the George Washington/Lindenwood play-in meet on Apr. 4.
Â
The top two finishers from the four regionals (Baton Rouge, Ann Arbor, Athens and Corvallis) will advance to the 2019 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships in Ft. Worth, Texas, Apr. 19-20.
Â
This season marks the first time that the women's gymnastics tournament will feature a four-team format all the way through to the NCAA Championship finals. It is a change from the six-team format used from 1987-2018 and other configurations utilized in the 1970s and '80s. The new format eliminates the two bye rotations that were necessary with six teams, while still allowing 36 teams to qualify into regionals.
Â
The Utes are attempting to advance to a record 44th-consecutive national championship. Utah is the only program to qualify for the last 43 national championships, dating back to 1976, and including all 37 NCAA Championships (began in 1982).
Â
The Utes are coming off a runner-up finish at the Pac-12 Championship, where junior
MyKayla Skinner tied for first on floor and vault and finished second in the all-around to lead Utah to its highest score of the season (198.025).
Â
Fans may purchase Baton Rouge Regional tickets in the Utah section of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at
UtahTickets.com and 801-581-UTIX. The meet will be broadcast live on SECN+ and ESPN 700 radio.
