SALT LAKE CITY – Four Utah starters scored in double figures to lead the Runnin' Utes past the USC Trojans, 83-74, Thursday evening at the Huntsman Center. Utah moved to 16-13 overall and 10-7 in Pac-12 play, while USC dropped to 15-15 on the season and 8-9 in the league standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Parker Van Dyke scored a team-high 20 points, connecting on six of Utah's 11 three-pointers and
Timmy Allen chipped in with 19 points.
Sedrick Barefield poured in 17 points, while pulling down a career-high seven rebounds, and
Donnie Tillman scored 10 points.
Both Gach scored 10 points off the bench to give Utah five players in double-figures overall.
Utah shot 52.5 percent from the field overall, which included a 40.7 percent from behind the three-point arc. USC managed to shoot 55.6 percent overall and 41.2 percent from downtown, but the Utes managed to out-rebound the Trojans 32-23, while also scoring 17 second-chance points to USC's one-point.
Novak Topalovic tied Barefield for the team-high, pulling down seven boards as well.
USC led for a total of just 2:24, with its biggest lead coming by just two points on three separate occasions early on, but with Utah down 12-10 at the 14:18 mark of the first half, Van Dyke would knock down his second three-pointer of the game to give Utah a lead that it never relinquished. The Utes led by as many as 12 points in the first half before taking a 42-36 lead into the break.
Both teams would trade buckets back-and-forth to open the second half before Utah went on a 16-2 run to go up by 16 points, up 66-50 with 10:06 left to play. USC would only close within seven points of the Utes down the stretch and the home squad managed to run clock on the way to earning the victory.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak
Opening statements …
"I thought we were pretty darn solid. Three-point shooting for that team is huge. They have been averaging 12.4 in their last five games and they managed to make seven, but without Jayce, I thought it was really important to out-rebound them. We out-rebounded them by nine. We had one of our season highs in deflections, had a lot of activity, and then had five guys in double figures. So, short of getting a little bit too interesting at the end, that was our goal 12 or fewer turnovers and we were on a single digit pace for quite a while and then we got a little bit sloppy at the end, but it was good. Big performances I thought. Parker hit some big shots and Novak came in and gave us 32 great minutes when he hadn't been playing much and had some sparks flying amongst the two Serbians. It was a good win for us."
On making defensive stops …
"We still let them shoot 60 percent in the second half so I don't know that we can hang our hat a whole lot on defense. We gave up a lot of 2's. We had some breakdowns but we were willing to live with some of the post play and some of the 2's because the 3's for that team are unbelievable. They hit 19 of them in their last game against UCLA and had 28 assists and lost. They have a lot of guys that can shoot the ball and I think that is some of the percentages got into allowing, part of the game plan, some of the 2's. I thought the guys were pretty focused. We played pretty hard. We struggled a little bit at times with their zone, but shared the basketball. It was real positive.
On the adjustments playing without Jayce …
"Novak gave us a presence. We did play some small ball from time to time and the thing that I really liked was that we did a good job rebounding. Our guards got a lot of rebounds. We weren't really interested in leaking out and trying to score early and I thought we put some bodies on bodies. The Colorado game, there was a number of rebounding opportunities. We worked on block-outs this week and USC sends a bunch of guys to the glass. So without doing that, that allowed us to get out at times and you saw some of the leak out, but we were still committed to rebounding and it was done collectively. I wrote on the board that we needed a bunch of warriors and we had one of our guys down. Jayce has grabbed a lion-share of our rebounds this season and I think everybody kind of took a little responsibility on themselves to fill in some of those gaps.
USC head coach Andy Enfield
On how to get Utah off the three-point line and what didn't happen …
"A couple times on ball screens we gave up those three's and when we would fight through they would shot fake and Van Dyke stepped through in the first half and hit a really tough shot. He hit another one down in the corner when the shot-clock was winding down so we got to give them credit. They hit some really tough shots tonight."
On how Utah dominated the boards and what that tells him …
"They scored a lot on transition and on second chance points so we have to do a better job on the offensive glass ourselves. We only had two offensive rebounds so we had no offensive rebounds from our guards or forwards. We shot a high percentage from the field but there was a couple toughness plays that we missed out on."
