SALT LAKE CITY—The 2019 Red Rocks gathered one final time before the start of finals to celebrate the season and each other at a team banquet. The formal affair gave the gymnasts a chance to appear publicly in something other than leotards and school-logoed sweatsuits and their dress attire complimented the surroundings of the private banquet room at the Market Street Broiler in its picturesque location near the base of the Wasatch Mountains.
A slideshow of photos played throughout the appetizer and dinner courses commemorating a 2019 season that saw the Utes take second at the Pac-12 and Regional Championships and qualify into the NCAA Championships in its first year of a reduced eight-team field.
After dinner,
Tom Farden began the presentation by thanking members of the staff for their commitment to the gymnastics program.
Megan Marsden, who just two days earlier had announced her retirement after 35 years on the Utah coaching staff, presented the annual team awards and posed for pictures with the winners.
The 2019 gymnastics award winners were:
MyKayla Skinner (MVP),
Kari Lee and
MaKenna Merrell-Giles (Greg Marsden Leadership Award),
Macey Roberts (Coaches Award for Most Improved Gymnast) and
Sydney Soloski (Dahl Academic-Athletic Award).
It was then time for Marsden to be honored in a tearful, yet joyous ceremony celebrating her many years as a lynchpin in the Utah gymnastics dynasty. Farden presented her with a gift and senior co-captains Lee and Merrell-Giles played a "thank you video" they orchestrated, featuring Utah gymnasts over the decades sharing memories of Marsden and their well wishes in retirement.
The evening ended with a video created and produced by student gymnastics videographer Max Trevino.
