PROVO -Â Utah Softball captured the Deseret First Duel for the first time since 2014 and won down south for the first time in a decade with an 11-2 win over BYU this evening.Â
Â
In her final rivalry game,
Ally Dickman went 5-for-5 with a pair of runs and four driven in,
Alyssa Barrera smacked a two-run homer and Utah native
Ryley Ball had two hits and scored twice.
Sydney Sandez entered in relief and pitched five scoreless frames to earn the victory in the circle.
Â
Dickman and Barrera provided an early jolt to the Utah offense. After being blanked in three of their last four games, the two Utes both homered in the first frame. Dickman's was a solo shot, her team-leading eighth, while Barrera's gave her 32 runs batted in, most on the team.
Â
BYU loaded the bases in the bottom half and after an amazing catch in center by Barrera, Emilee Erickson singled through the left side for a run. The Cougars ran themselves out of the inning as a pitch got by
Katie Faulk and the runner on third froze while the other two advanced. This created confusion with a pair of runners occupying one bag and
Ellessa Bonstrom applied a tag for the out.
Â
Marissa Chavez doubled and Brooke Vander Heide singled to put runners on the corners with one down in the second before BYU pulled closer on a ground out from Rylee Jensen.
Â
After Barrera reached on a fielder's choice in the third,
Hailey Hilburn singled to center. Due to some aggressive base-running, Barrera forced a throw to third. It went awry and she scooted home for the Utes.
BreOnna Castaneda was next, crushing a double to push the lead back to three. A strong at-bat for
Abby Robertson resulted in a ball to short but the long throw was not picked cleanly at first and Castaneda came around to make it 6-2.
Â
BYU put the first two on in the bottom half and prompted a pitching change to Sandez. With the bases loaded, Chavez popped up to Noskin to keep the Utes firmly in control.Â
Â
Utah kept attacking in the fourth. Ball opened with a single and
Julia Noskin bunted. The throw to cut down the lead runner was off the mark and both runners moved into scoring position.
Ally Dickman laced her third hit, a two-run double, down the left-field line.
Â
An error and single put a pair of Cougars on in the fifth but Sandez fielded a comeback to the circle before firing for the force and then blew a third strike past Lexi Tarrow.
Â
Dickman's fourth hit started the sixth and Bonstrom reached as well. With two on, Barrera advanced both runners with a ground ball to the right side. BYU was able to get a ball back to the circle, holding the runners, and then a grounder to short that kept the score intact.
Â
Utah capped the game as it began, with a three-spot in the seventh.Â
Alyssa Palacios reached on an error, advanced on a wild pitch and came in on a single by Ball. Ball moved up on a grounder to first and scored on Dickman's fifth knock, a single to right. The Utah senior then came home on a Bonstrom double for the final run.
Â
The Utes host Oregon on Friday at 6 p.m. in the final night game of the season at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
