MALIBU, Calif.  – The No. 16 Utah volleyball team battled No. 6 Pittsburgh in an extremely close four-set match, but the Panthers edged out the Utes (22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25) to give them their first loss of the season in Malibu, California.

Junior
Dani Drews had 18 kills hitting .311 with seven digs and 5.0 blocks.
Phoebe Grace was a force once again at the net, picking up 10.0 blocks for the second match in a row.

Utah went on an early 5-0 run behind four blocks to go up 12-9 and force a Pittsburgh timeout. The Panthers came back and took control of the set with a big run to go up 20-14. Late in the set, the Utes got back within one behind a couple of kills from Drews, but Pittsburgh composed itself after a timeout to take the opening set 25-22.

Neither team gave the other an inch in the second set as the largest margin either team faced was just two. Tied at 23, Drews got a kill and
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres and
Berkeley Oblad got a block to even things up at one.

The third set was very similar to the second. The second Pittsburgh went up 15-12, Utah responded with a 4-0 run to go up 16-15 forcing the Panthers to use a timeout. Pitt took control of the set a little bit later taking a 24-20 lead. The Utes spoiled a couple of set points getting back to within one, but the Panthers held on to take the set 25-23.

Utah got off to a great start in the fourth set leading 7-3 early, but Pitt used a 4-0 run a little later to tie things up at 14. The two teams traded points from there until late when the Panthers won six of the final eight points to end the match.

Zoe Weatherington pitched in with 10 kills hitting .217.

Brianna Doehrmann had 19 digs leading the defensive effort with Grace. The team as a whole had 14.0 blocks.

Utah will be back on the court tonight at 6 p.m. MT for a rematch with Cal Poly. The Utes defeated Cal Poly in five sets earlier this season in the Utah Volleyball Classic.
