PARK CITY, Utah – A weekend away from the gym and the heat, the Utah gymnastics team spent Labor Day weekend in Park City for this year's team retreat. With many new faces on the team and staff, the valuable time spent together emphasized the importance of teamwork, communication, and other crucial life skills.
This year's annual retreat kicked off on Friday night when the team headed to Park City, where they would remain for the entire holiday weekend. The Red Rocks spent the first night sharing their personal stories to better get to know one another.
After Saturday morning's breakfast, the team was set to participate in a ropes course for the day's activity. During the ropes course, the Red Rocks were able to support each other, develop trust, and learn the importance of teamwork throughout these different tasks.
The Utah coaching staff put their cooking skills to test Saturday night and prepared some of their favorite foods for the team. After a great dinner, the Utes closed out the evening by having volunteer coach
Courtney McCool Griffeth lead a "Book Club" discussion from a book the team had read in preparation of the retreat.
On the final full day in the mountains, the Red Rocks competed in the "Park Silly Days" photo scavenger hunt that was led by assistant coach
Garrett Griffeth.
After the fun event on the streets of Park City, the tables turned and the gymnasts were tasked to put together their own meal. The freshmen were put in charge of salads, the sophomores had side dishes, while the upperclassmen were tasked with providing the proteins. The last big task for the Ute gymnasts was creating the team vision board. The vision board serves as team goals and guidelines for the season that the Red Rocks put together themselves.
Continuing their time in the beautiful mountains Utah has to offer, the Red Rocks will extend the fun when the team heads to Snowbasin for this year's photo shoot on Saturday, Sept. 21. The annual photoshoot has become one of the most unique branding pieces in all of college gymnastics. The Utes also will begin official practice the day before the shoot, Friday, Sept. 20.Â
