Men's Golf Kicks Off Their Season at the Gopher Invite

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's golf team will play in its first tournament of the season this Sunday and Monday, Sept. 8-9, at the Gopher Invitational. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com and will be updated hole by hole throughout the tournament.
The two day, 54-hole event will be held at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. This course has a par-71 layout and measures 7,368 yards.
The 14 teams competing at this tournament are Arkansas, Baylor, Iowa, Kent State, Marquette, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Purdue, San Diego State, Texas A&M, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Utah.
"It will be a great start to the fall season," head coach Garrett Clegg said. "The Gopher Invitational is a high-quality field. It's a long and difficult golf course. That will be a great test for all the players and teams competing."
The Utes opened their season at this tournament in 2018 as well with two out of the five players who competed in last year's tournament returning to the course again in 2019. The Utes will travel eight players, five for the Gopher Invitational and three as individuals who will compete in the Pioneer Creek Colligate, a Division III tournament.
The five players competing for the varsity team are senior Mitchell Schow, junior Tristan Mandur, sophomore Axel Einarsson and two true freshmen in Javier Barcos and Jesper von Reedtz.
At last year's Gopher invitational, Einarsson tied for 32nd with a score of 6-over par (219) and Mandur tied for 38th with a score of 7-over par (220). This will be Schow's first Gopher invitational but after competing in over 29 events in the past three years for the Utes, he is more then ready.
Schow won't be the only player making his debut on the course as both Barocs and von Reedtz look to step up in their first collegiate tournament.
The Pioneer Creek Collegiate is held at the Pioneer Creek Golf Course in Maple Plain, Minn. Each of the 14 teams competing in the Gopher Invitational will send three players to compete as individuals on this course. The three players competing for the Utes are Oscar Maxfield, Peyton Hastings and Jordan Costello. This tournament will run the same days as the Gopher invitational.
The team departs Friday after classes and will practice on Saturday before gearing up to play on Sunday and Monday. On Sunday the 1st round tee's off at 7:15 a.m. and then on Monday the final round tees off at 7:15 a.m.
"I can't wait to get the season started," Clegg said.
