ASPEN, Colo. – Eirin Engeset finished third in the women's giant slalom to lead the Utah ski team in the season-opening RMISA Aspen qualifier on Friday.
RMISA qualifiers do not count towards any team scoring and are used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season.
"I am very happy to start the season off with a third place!" Engeset said. "We had a wide variety of weather but they did a good job with the hill. It is really fun being back racing with the team!"
Engeset has seven podium finishes in her collegiate career.
Sona Moravcikova, in her first year at Utah after transferring from New Mexico, placed seventh while
Katie Parker was 12
th.
Katie Vesterstein placed 22
nd.
The Utes were led in the men's race by
Fredrik Maurstad, who had a career-best 11
th-place finish.
Tomas Birkner was 18
th with
Addison Dvoracek 19
th.
Huston Philp was 24
th. Several Utes struggled on their second runs,
Joachim Lien did not finish his second run after running the second-fastest first run and Gustav Vøllo also did not finish his second run after a strong first run.
"Variable conditions today made things tough," head alpine coach
JJ Johnson said. "The guys have been skiing well at NorAms leading up to this weekend, and it was a tough second run for several of them. Freddy is finally getting to where he doesn't have much pain and it showed in his results. Tomas had a good second run to move up. Eirin just got back from an injury so for her to come out and execute was really impressive. She is a rockstar and has a lot more in the tank. Sona is also coming back from injury and was right in there, which was also awesome to see.
Katie Parker skied really solid and this was a good GS race for Katie V.
"It was good to have 10 skiing today considering the injuries we have struggled with, but it's a process and I have no doubt we will be at full strength by March."
The Denver Invitational starts with the giant slalom on Saturday and follows with the slalom on Sunday.
