SAN FRANCISCO – Utah gymnast
Kim Tessen has been named the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week after winning two events at the Rio Tinto Best of Utah to help lead No. 4 Utah to a win over Brigham Young, Southern Utah, and Utah State. This is Tessen's first Pac-12 weekly award of her career.
Tessen earned event victories on bars and floor to help Utah become just the third team in the nation to hit the 197-mark on the season, scoring a 197.000 last Saturday. Tessen put up a career-high 9.95 on bars as Utah's event anchor, while the second event victory from the quad-meet came from her 9.90 floor routine, which matched her career-high mark. Tessen also scored a 9.85 on vault to place third overall and come in as Utah's second-highest scored vault of the night.
Including the two event wins at the Rio Tinto Best of Utah, Tessen has five event victories in just two meets this season and seven wins in her career.
This is Utah's first Pac-12 award of the season. The award also marks the first time since the 2016 season that a Ute gymnast has been selected as the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week.
Tessen and the No. 4-ranked Utah gymnastics team will take a break from competition this week before hosting Arizona State on Friday, Jan. 24 at the Huntsman Center. The conference opener for the Utes is set to begin at 7 p.m.
