TEMPE, Ariz. – A late push in the second half by the University of Utah men's basketball team was not enough as it dropped an 83-64 decision Saturday night to Arizona State inside Desert Financial Arena.
The first half saw Arizona State take an early lead and held a two-possession lead over the Utes (10-7, 1-4 Pac-12) until
Alfonso Plummer nailed a triple to cut the deficit down to 17-14. Despite Utah shooting just 29-percent in the first half to ASU's 38-percent, Utah trailed just 29-23.
As the Utes began to make their charge on the heels of a 6-0 run to cut the ASU lead down to 41-36 in the second half, Teashon Cherry drilled a corner three followed by a Ute turnover and bucket from Remy Martin all of a sudden saw the deficit go back to double digits, 46-36.
From there, turnovers by Utah coupled with timely shots from Arizona State (11-7, 2-3 Pac-12) on the other end saw ASU push its lead back up to 56-40 and forced the Utes to call a timeout with 8:05 left to play. However, Utah went on an 11-3 run of its own out of the timeout behind back-to-back 3-pointers from
Jaxon Brenchley and
Riley Battin to cut the lead back down to single-digits, 59-51.
After ASU's timeout to stop the run by Utah, the Sun Devils went on an 8-0 run of their own and set the Utes back 67-51 at the 3:45 media break. That run by ASU along with the clock winding down was too much to overcome for the Utes as they dropped their fourth-straight game, 83-64.
Timmy Allen finished with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season while
Mikael Jantunen added 10 points and five rebounds on 4-of-4 shooting with two assists off the bench with Plummer posting nine points of his own.
BY THE NUMBERS
Utah is now 34-23 all-time against the Sun Devils, but have won seven of the last 10 meetings between the two teams … Utah surrendered 28 points to ASU on 18 turnovers while only scoring nine points off 13 Sun Devil turnovers … the Utes had won three-straight games when leading the battle of the glass before losing tonight's game leading ASU 38-30 on the boards … the 16 assists tonight was the first time Utah had dished out 15-plus assists in a game since upsetting then No. 6/6 Kentucky (15).

Opening Statement…
"I was pretty pleased with our defense initially in the game. The offense, it's just been atrocious. Individual players need to step up and have impact. I think we need to do a better job of sharing the ball. You know we had a pretty good plan first half, we were really good with Remy Martin and I thought our post defense was really good. We let Rob Edwards get loose, I think he had 12 at half and that was a difference. I mean we are down six at half. Offensively, I thought the first half was kind of a killer. Then we went into the second half, got down 16, and made some terrific basketball plays. We shared ball, hit a couple open threes, cut a 16-point lead down to eight in less than three minutes, and then kind of got back to that forced offense."
UP NEXT
The Utes return to the friendly confines of the Jon M. Huntsman Center next week as they play host to Washington (Jan. 23) and Washington State (Jan. 25) on the Pac-12 Network before heading to Los Angeles for a pair of games against USC (Jan. 30) and UCLA (Feb. 2).
