The women of Utah continue to impress throughout the indoor season.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. & OGDEN, Utah — The University of Utah track and field team capped of its three-meet weekend at the Husky Classic and Weber State Invite on Saturday with three all-time performances.Â
In an outstanding effort, Sarah Newton moved herself into the school record books, running under five minutes in the mile event for the first time in her indoor career. Newton posted a huge PR in 4:42.24 to finish 16th-overall against a loaded field that totaled 77 runners. Sophie Ryan joined in on the fun,running under five minutes to win her heat and came in 28th with a new PR (4:49.63). Newton's time moved her into third all-time while Ryan jumped from ninth to seventh. Â
"Outstanding race by Newton...she stayed tough during the third 400-meters and finished well. There's a lot to build off of with a race like that against a great field," noted head coach Kyle Kepler.Â
Brooke Manson capped off the Husky Classic competing in the 800m run with an inspiring performance, earning a new PR and vaulted from ninth to fifth all-time. Manson trailed early in the race but continued to run strong throughout and finished third in her heat - which was good for sixth-overall in 2:07.31.Â
"She went through 400-meters in dead last, but never wavered and had an outstanding kick for third-place in her heat and sixth-overall. It was an awesome way to wrap up a successful weekend," coach Kepler said.
Ally Gomm got the day started for the Utes at the Weber State Invite, posting a new PR in the 400m race (1:00.07), which was good for third-overall.Â
The 800m event saw freshman Kaitlyn Mercer secure the win with a time of 2:17.46 while Aniya Bobo ran a strong race earning 14th (2:32.47). Nicole Griffiths was the lone Ute in the 1k race and captured the event title in a close one against teammate Natalie Platil - who was competing unattached. Griffiths crossed the finish line at 3:03.38 while Platil clocked a time of 3:04.95.Â
Freshman Karli Branch made her indoor season debut running in the mile race unattached and notched a time of 5:27.13 for 13th. The Utes had four entries in the 3k event and saw three finishing in the top-10. Ellie Lundgreen paced Utah, recording a time of 10:20.00 flat for fifth while Emma Christensen finished two spots back in 7th (10:24.04). Grace Burnett and Sara Leonard rounded out the Utah entries placing ninth and 10th, respectively. Burnett clocked a time of 10:55.84 while Leonard came in at 10:58.60.Â
Next weekend, the Utes will send Kolbi Sims backup to Seattle to compete at the UW Last Chance meet while coach Kepler will take a DMR squad out to Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete at the JDL DMR Invite Friday, Feb. 21st. Â
