BOZEMAN, Mont. – Freshman Gustav Vøello finished on the podium for the men while
Katie Parker led the women as the Utah ski team competed in an RMISA giant slalom qualifier on Thursday.
The RMISA giant slalom qualifier does not count towards any team scoring but is used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships.
Vøello earned his first career podium finish with his second-place run. He has five top-10 finishes this season.
"I am really happy with the day," Vøello said. "I had two solid runs, despite running a later bib on soft snow in first run and attacking a rough and difficult second run. In the end I am glad to finally get two good runs in and land my first college podium. Now I'm focusing on the Regionals and I'm excited to fight with the team for the championship."
Joachim Lien and
Huston Philp both rallied from difficult first runs to finish ninth and 10
th, respectively. Philp had the fastest second run while Lien's second run was the second-fastest of the field. It was Philp's best finish of the season.
Fredrik Maurstad did not finish his first run while
Addison Dvoracek and
Tomas Birkner did not finish their second runs.
Parker finished fourth to lead the women, her third top-five finish in four races.
Roni Remme did not finish her first run while
Eirin Engeset and
Katie Vesterstein did not finish their second runs.
"Snow conditions were not ideal," Parker said. "It was pretty soft snow and the hill was a lot more mellow than last week at Park City, but I just tried to keep moving and generate speed. I had a good start number first run which helped but second run I just tried to ski solid and it worked out!"
The RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional begins on Friday with the giant slalom and 5-km and 10-km freestyle races.
