SAN FRANCISCO – University of Utah gymnast
Kim Tessen was named the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week after earning the first perfect 10 of her career last weekend against Stanford in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Tessen exploded off the table as Utah's anchor on vault and perfectly stuck her Yurchenko 1.5 to record a 10.0 for the first time of her career. The Ute senior is one of just six gymnasts in the nation to have recorded a 10.0 on vault this season. She also became the 10th gymnast in Utah history to post a perfect mark on vault.
The Orem, Utah native is ranked No. 1 on vault in the Pac-12 Conference and is tied for No. 9 in the nation with a national qualifying score of 9.910. Tessen's perfect mark on vault against Stanford earned her the fourth vault title of the season, which added to her team-high 10 total event victories on the year.
Also in Utah's win against Stanford to close out Pac-12 play undefeated, Tessen entered the floor lineup after a last minute change and scored a 9.90 to place in a tie for second. Tessen has scored a 9.90 or higher on at least one event in every meet this season and has reached the 9.90-mark in 15-of-24 routines.
The Pac-12 Specialist of the Week selection marks Tessen's second of the season and of her career. It is the sixth weekly award for Utah this season.Â
Tessen and the No. 4-ranked Ute gymnasts will host Utah State this Friday, March 10 at 7 p.m. for Senior Night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
