SAN FRANCISCO – After recording an undefeated season and winning the inaugural Pac-12 Regular Season Championship, the Utah gymnastics team garnered two Pac-12 awards and landed eight gymnasts on the All-Pac-12 Gymnastics team. The historic run led
Tom Farden to be named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year, while senior
Kim Tessen was named the Pac-12 Specialist of the Year for her season-long efforts.Â
Tessen's Pac-12 Specialist of the Year selection is the first Pac-12 annual award for Utah since the 2016 season, while the Pac-12 Coach of the Year honor for Farden is the program's first since 2015. Tessen is the third Utah gymnast to earn the honor, while Farden joins two-time co-winners Greg and Megan Marsden as Pac-12 Coach of the Year honorees.Â
In his fifth season overall as head coach and first as the sole head coach, Farden led the Red Rocks to an 11-0 record before the season was ended due to the Coronavirus outbreak. It was the first undefeated regular season in school history since 1993 and was just the second all-time. Utah finished the conference slate 7-0 to be named the first-ever Pac-12 regular season champions and mark the second time since joining the conference that Utah has finished undefeated in Pac-12 play. Farden's competitive spirit led the 2020 squad in outlasting the grueling Pac-12 season that included knocking off the top half of the conference all on the road.
Leading the team throughout the entire year, Tessen had a breakout season as a senior and headlined Utah's historic run. With just two total event victories heading into the 2020 season, Tessen collected a team-high 10 event wins this season, which doubled the next highest amount by a Ute. The Orem, Utah native shined on vault and bars all season and finished ranked No. 9 in the nation on both events to earn her first career All-America honors.
Tessen finished as the No. 1 vaulter in the Pac-12 with a 9.910 National Qualifying Score (NQS). She totaled four vault titles this year from her Yurchenko 1.5 and capped off her career by earning her first perfect 10 in what ended up being her final meet. Tessen was one of just six gymnasts in the NCAA to post a perfect score on vault this season and one of just two gymnasts in the Pac-12.
On bars, Tessen finished No. 2 in the Pac-12 with a 9.920 NQS. She scored a career-high 9.975 against California on the road and also posted a 9.95 against UCLA on the road and at the Rio Tinto Best of Utah to highlight her season on bars. Tessen totaled four bars victories, while her other two this season came from floor.
Tessen posted career-highs on every event this season and scored a 9.90 on at least one event in every meet. Tessen's efforts on vault and bars earned first team All-Pac-12 honors. She will end her time as a Ute with three All-Pac-12 selections from her two this season and her second-team selection on vault as a sophomore.
In addition to Utah's Coach of the Year and Specialist of the Year honors, the Red Rocks landed eight gymnasts to the All-Pac-12 teams, totaling 10 awards. Receiving first-team honors along with Tessen were
Cristal Isa (bars and beam),
Alexia Burch (vault),
Abby Paulson (beam),
Maile O'Keefe (beam) and
Sydney Soloski (floor).
Earning a spot as honorable mention selections on the All-Pac-12 teams wereÂ
Missy Reinstadtler (bars) and
Adrienne Randall (beam).
