SAN FRANCISCO – Ute gymnast
Abby Paulson has been named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week following her meet-winning beam routine against No. 12 Washington last week on the road. This is Paulson's first Pac-12 weekly award of her career.
For the second-straight week on the road, Paulson anchored Utah's beam lineup with a meet-clinching routine to ensure Utah remained undefeated in Pac-12 play and the entire season. Against Washington, Paulson posted a 9.95 on beam to see Utah edge the Huskies and become the inaugural Pac-12 Regular Season champions.
Utah has now topped the three highest ranked Pac-12 teams all on the road thanks to incredible beam efforts, those of which Paulson has anchored with two 9.95s and a 10.0 to clinch the win. The Anoka, Minn. native ranks as the top freshman in the Pac-12 on beam with an outstanding NQS of 9.925, and is No. 3 overall in the Pac-12, only behind two seniors, and tied for No. 9 in the nation following the meet against Washington. Paulson's 9.95 on beam against Washington also set the Red Rocks at their fourth-straight beam score of at least 49.600 to be just one of two programs in the nation to have posted four scores of 49.6 or higher on beam this season.
All three of Paulson's event scores contributed to a 197.675 team score from the Red Rocks, which was the highest of the Pac-12 last week and Utah's second-highest team score of the season. Paulson led off Utah's floor lineup and added a 9.85 to a season-high floor score of 49.550. On bars, Paulson scored a 9.80 for another hit routine. She has hit 20-20 routines this season.
This marks the fifth weekly award for Utah this season. Paulson joins
Maile O'Keefe (Jan. 29, Feb. 18) as Pac-12 Freshman of the Week selections for Utah, while
Kim Tessen was named Pac-12 Specialist of the Week on Jan. 14 and
Adrienne Randall on Feb. 12.
Paulson and the No. 4 Ute gymnasts will be back in the Huntsman Center this Friday, March 6 against Stanford for a Pink Meet at 7 p.m. MT. Utah's final Pac-12 matchup of the season will be live streamed, simulcast on the Pac-12 Plus Facebook page and broadcast on ESPN 700 radio.
