MONTREAL, Canada – MyKayla Skinner competed on the international stage for the first time since 2016 this past weekend at the 2020 Gymnix International Cup. Skinner competed as a member of Team USA that went on to win the gold, as well as claiming three individual gold medals in Montreal in her return to international competition.
"I am so incredibly grateful to have earned the opportunity to compete on the international stage after being away from elite competition for so long," said Skinner. "It felt amazing to be back out there for the first time in four years and compete for Team USA. I have been training so hard to improve my skills and compete at the highest level. Winning three gold medals and a team gold at Gymnix was an amazing feeling and I am so grateful to be living my dream after I thought it was all over."
Skinner swept the competition in the event finals on Sunday and took home the gold on all three events she competed on. Skinner posted a 14.367 on vault and a 14.133 on floor to place first, while she recorded a 13.766 on bars, which tied for the senior title. Her bars and floor scores both improved from the first night of competition.
To open the event on Friday night in her international debut, Skinner placed second in the all-around and helped guide Team USA to a first-place finish. Skinner's performances on vault, bars and floor from the opening night earned her a spot in the three event finals on Sunday.
"It was nice to see all the work in the gym translate to the competition floor, but I still have more to give and am ready to get back into the gym and sharpen my skills," Skinner stated. "I am so thankful for my coaches, fans, family and my girls on the national team for their continuous support!"
Skinner will continue to train at Desert Lights Gymnastics while pursuing a berth on Team USA for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
