INDIANAPOLIS – Former Utah gymnastics All-American
Kim Tessen has been nominated for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year award, the NCAA announced today.
In the 30th year of the award, a record 605 female student-athletes have been nominated, including 259 nominees from Division I. Conferences will select up to two nominees from the pool of candidates followed by the Woman of the Year selection committee then choosing the top 30 honorees (10 per division), which will be announced in September.
The selection committee will then determine the three finalists in each division among the 30 honorees. The members of the Committee on Women's Athletics will vote among the nine finalists to determine the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named this fall.
Graduating student-athletes nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year award have been selected based on their academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership during their college careers.
Following a stellar senior season for the Red Rocks, Tessen graduated with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. The Orem, Utah native was a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection and two-time WCGA Scholastic All-American in her career. Tessen also earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll all four seasons and Dean's List twice.
Tessen shined for the Utah gymnastics team this past season where she went on to earn regular season All-American honors on bars and vault. Tessen's season-long efforts on bars and vault earned her the title of the Pac-12 Specialist of the Year, while garnering first-team All-Pac-12 honors on both events. Tessen finished as the No. 1 vaulter in the Pac-12 in 2020 and finished No. 9 in the nation on bars and vault. In 2018, she earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors on vault.
She posted career-highs of 10.0 on vault, 9.975 on bars and 9.925 on floor, collected 12 event victories, and hit 78-85 routines during her career at Utah. Tessen led the Red Rocks to the inaugural Pac-12 Regular Season Championship and the second undefeated regular season in school history in 2020, and was a member of the squad that won the 2017 Pac-12 Championships. Tessen's teams qualified into the NCAA Championships her first three seasons, including two fifth-place finishes, and were expecting another deep run in this year's postseason before the season was canceled.
Tessen was named a team captain as a senior, and when she was not leading the team in the gym, she was setting an example in the community. Tessen volunteered time at Backman Elementary to engage and teach students, participating in the Family Night for Dia De Los Muertos and the school's PlayWorks program. She also helped prepare care packages in the fall to send to Zimbabwe in support of the group Eyes4Zimbabwe.
Tessen was also a very active member of the campus community and served in many leadership roles. Tessen spent three years as a Wellness Ambassador and Crimson Council representative for gymnastics. She was named the winner of the school's Wellness Advocate award this year for demonstrating a commitment to personal wellness and advocating for mental health awareness among all student-athletes. Additionally, Tessen was a member of the UTAH group (United Together Against Hate), which focuses on social justice issues and change.
