SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team found the right time to click on all cylinders as it stymied Arizona State all afternoon to the tune of 98-59 Saturday inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center to wrap up the regular-season.
With the win, the Utes will be the seventh-seed in the upcoming Pac-12 Tournament and face No. 10 Washington on Wednesday, March 10, at 5 p.m. (MT) on Pac-12 Networks. The winner will play the No. 2 seed on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (MT). This will be the first time Utah has entered the conference tournament as the No. 7 seed since joining the Pac-12.
The 39-point margin of victory was the third-highest in Pac-12 play for Utah. Coincidentally the highest was against ASU, an 83-41 victory back on Feb. 26, 2015.
Mikael Jantunen gave Utah (11-12, 8-11 Pac-12) a quick 5-0 start to the game and put the Utes on top 11-8 after he drained a pair of free throw with 13:47 on the clock. The Sun Devils answered with a 6-0 run to take their first and only lead of the game, 14-11, before
Timmy Allen finished after contact to complete the and-1 play out of the 11:22 media break. That led to a 7-0 run that regained the lead for Utah and was capped off by a jumper from
Jaxon Brenchley to go up 18-14.
Leading 20-16 heading out of the Arizona State (10-13, 7-10 Pac-12) timeout, Allen connected with
Branden Carlson on a full court pass for the one-handed jam. Alonzo Verge Jr. tried to keep the Sun Devils within striking distance of Utah but Jantunen answered each time with a basket of his own as the two headed into the break with 13 points apiece.
Utah shot 58.6-percent (17-of-29) from the floor in the first half with 10 assists as a team to lead ASU 41-28. Jantunen, the Pac-12's leader in field-goal percentage, was a big part of the Utes shooting so well hitting 5-of-6 from the floor and didn't miss until there was 50 seconds left in the half.
The Runnin' Utes carried that momentum into the second-half and jumped out to a 12-3 run for the 53-31 lead at the 16:20 mark. Up 53-32 coming out of the 15:54 media break, the Utes pushed their lead even further thanks to a 16-7 run capped off by a pair of 3-pointers from
Alfonso Plummer – who had 11 second-half points.
With the game out of reach, Utah emptied its bench with 4:59 left to go and erupted when
Eli Ballstaedt connected with
Brooks King on the breakaway layup for his first points of the season. Of the 13 available players, 11 scored for Utah while freshman
Jack Jamele made his collegiate debut with 1:52 on the clock.
Utah finished with five players in double-figures led by Plummer and Jantunen with 15 points apiece. The Big Fin also had seven rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting while Plummer dished out a career-high four assists on 6-of-10 shooting – three of which came from downtown. Allen was on triple-double watch before finishing with 13 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.
Ian Martinez added 12 points, five rebounds and four steals on 4-of-5 shooting. Carlson finished the afternoon just shy of a double-double, posting 11 points and eight rebounds in the win.
