ORLANDO – University of Utah track & field student-athlete
Maya LeBar was one of 68 recipients across the country that earned 2020-21 Academic Momentum Award First-Team honors as announced by the Scholar Baller® program in conjunction with the Institute for Sport & Social Justice (ISSJ) last Tuesday.
Â
Top nominees were categorized into three teams based on each student-athletes academic improvement and the impact each student-athlete has had on their classmates, teammates, academic advisors and professors.
Â
LeBar, a junior academically, currently holds six top-10 times since joining the Utah track & field team for the 2018-19 season. The Spokane, Wash., product holds three marks in the indoor record books, checking in at second in the 55m, seventh in the 60m and fifth in the 200m. She also holds three marks in the outdoor record books, sitting in ninth in the 100m, fourth in the 200m and eighth in the triple jump. In addition, LeBar was a member of the 4x100m relay team that set the new school record this season (2020-21) and has ran a leg in two of the other top-five times in program history.
Â
On top of her academic and athletic accolades, LeBar has been a vocal leader of the UTAH (United Together Against Hate) Group within the athletics department. She has both attended and led the social justice advocacy student-athlete group as one of two interns to help spearhead group meetings, community events and increase involvement amongst her peers. She has also organized a handful of events this past year that have had over 100 student-athletes in attendance.
Â
A total of 27 male and female award recipients were selected for the Academic Momentum Award First-Team, 18 recipients were chosen for the Academic Momentum Award Second Team, and 23 recipients were selected for the Academic Momentum Award Third Team.Â
Â
Established in 1995, the Scholar Baller® movement evolved in response to concerns that the student-athlete's athletics role increasingly superseded the student role. The Scholar Baller® program continues to produce unprecedented outcomes in student retention, academic achievement, and career development.
