BOZEMAN, Mont. – Hitting the halfway mark of a busy stretch of racing,
Madison Hoffman found her way to the podium with a third-place slalom finish as Utah's alpine skiing team began the RMISA Invitational on Thursday.
It was the third straight day on the hill at Bridger Bowl for the Utes, who sit third in the RMISA Invitational team standings but are only 10 points behind first-place Denver. Alpine squads arrived at Bridger Bowl earlier this week, with the first two days—GS on Tuesday and slalom on Wednesday—covering the Montana State Invitational.
"Just as has been the case this week, the snow was really challenging again today," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "But the depth of our team and everyone's skiing was so good. There were a lot of DNFs in random spots. After a tough day yesterday, Madi came back and grabbed a podium which is very good.
Katie Vesterstein came back nicely today as well. It's great on the women's side that our one through eight can be in the top-10."
Hoffman's podium was her first in slalom, and overall second in three days. It came on the heels of tabbing third in giant slalom on Tuesday. Utah also claimed the Nos. 10 through 12 spots with Vesterstein,
Michelle Kervén and
Sona Moravcikova in that order.
In the men's race,
Wilhelm Normannseth was the leading Ute finishing fourth and
Gustav Vøllo added a top-eight effort.
Oliver Parazette was 15
th on the day.
"
Gustav Vøllo is right where we want him to be," said Johnson. "He's as fast as any of the guys in slalom—he'd been losing seed points and did a really nice job moving up from 28th to seventh. That was really big to give him some confidence."
Bjorn Brudevoll won the first run of the day, but did not finish in his second run.
Utah and the rest of the RMISA field now will trek to Park City to begin three more days of racing. Action begins on Sunday, Jan. 23 with giant slalom competition as part of the RMISA Invitational. Another GS day will follow on Monday, Jan. 24 and slalom on Tuesday, Jan. 25, with the latter two serving as the alpine portion of the Utah Invitational.
Races are slated to begin at 9 a.m. on all three competition days at Park City Mountain Resort.
"This is a pretty intense grind right now," Johnson added. "But we're all excited to get home. We'll get a nice recovery day tomorrow, couple runs on Saturday to sharpen up, then we go again on Sunday."
