PARK CITY, Utah – After three straight days of racing in Bozeman, Montana, followed up by travel home, training and recovery, the Utah alpine skiing team returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 23 at Park City Mountain Resort for another stretch of three consecutive race days.
Sunday's giant slalom will be part of the RMISA Invitational, and will be followed up by another GS day on Monday, Jan. 24 and slalom on Tuesday, Jan. 25. Both Monday and Tuesday's competitions will serve as the alpine half of the Utah Invitational. Each day's corresponding runs will begin approximately at 9 a.m. and fans can watch from the Eagle Race Arena.
It'll ultimately bring the Utah Invitational to a close - the Nordic portion having taken place on January 2 and 6 at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah. Entering the alpine half, Utah's ahead in the team standings (349) and holds a 16-point cushion over Alaksa Anchorage.
Utah was last in action on Thursday, Jan. 20 on day one of the RMISA Invitational (slalom) at Bridger Bowl in Bozeman. The Utes are currently third in the team standings of that ongoing invitational, but are only 10 points behind first-place Denver. Individually,
Madison Hoffman hit her second podium of the season in three college races with a third-place finish. For the men,
Wilhelm Normannseth was the leading Ute finishing fourth.
That came on the heels of an absolutely dominant top-to-bottom finish to the Montana State Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 18-19, even in spite of challenging snow conditions all throughout the week. Most notably, the Utes (760 total points) won the meet by a whopping 253.5 points.
It was just two points shy of Utah's own RMISA record for most points in a single meet, and smashed the prior RMISA record for margin of victory. Previously, Denver held that mark with a 180-point triumph at the Montana State Invitational in 2014.
Four podium performances highlighted the giant slalom and slalom races of the MSU Invitational, including individual slalom wins for
Bjorn Brudevoll and
Katie Parker—the first victory of Parker's college career. In GS, Hoffman turned in third place and Normannseth tabbed second.
