PARK CITY, Utah – Utah skiing was back at Park City Mountain Resort on Monday, this time opening the alpine half of the Utah Invitational with the giant slalom. The Utes—who finished the Nordic part of the meet leading the team standings—remain atop the field following GS racing with 510 points, a 76-point margin in front of ahead of Alaska Anchorage in second place.
The Utah Invitational will wrap up on Tuesday, Jan. 25 with slalom racing at Park City Mountain Resort. Runs will begin just after 9 a.m., with fans welcome to watch from the base of Eagle Lift.
Three Utes were in the top-10 of Monday's women's GS, including
Katie Parker (fourth),
Sona Moravcikova (fifth) and
Claire Timmermann (ninth).
Katie Vesterstein added an 11
th-place effort, another display of the Utes' strong depth coming in handy as both
Madison Hoffman and
Kaja Norbye were unable to finish their first runs.
"To have two of our quickest girls go out right away was tough," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "But to see the others step up was incredible. Claire has been coming back and to see her get ninth was great.
Katie Parker and Sona did their thing again. We owe a lot to the culture of this team. We celebrate our successes, and pick up the ones that are down. At the end of the day, they all help each other out."
Parker has finished fourth in two of her giant slalom races this season—the other coming on Jan. 18 at the Montana State Invitational—and added a seventh-place result in Sunday's GS race. In particular, Monday's results were noteworthy for Moravcikova and Timmermann, as Moravcikova logged her first top-five GS race since 2020 and Timmermann cracked her third straight top-10 finish.
Utah claimed the Nos. 4-5 spots in the men's race, led by
Gustav Vøllo fourth-place tally and followed up by
Joachim Lien in fifth.
Bjorn Brudevoll was 12
th on the day,
Oliver Parazette took 13
th and
Jeremy Mathers took No. 24. Vollo had actually pulled in front of the field at the time his second run was completed but with the race ongoing.
"We had some mistakes in the guys' second run. But Joachim is climbing back up, Gustav finally found what he was trying to do. I think you'll see his speed continuing to improve. Bjorn to be 12
th in spite of some mistakes shows the positive changes he's making in GS.
Oliver Parazette is a freshman and he just keeps chipping away. He's starting to move up in GS."
