SAN FRANCISCO – Utah men's basketball point guard
Rollie Worster garnered his first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor on Monday after a stellar week on the hardwood floor and led the Runnin' Utes to a 2-0 start in conference play for the first time since 2017-18.
Â
This is the first player of the week award for Utah since the week of Feb. 1, 2021, when Alfonso Plummer earned the honor. It also marks the 13th time the Utes have had a player named Pac-12 Player of the Week since joining the league and first since head coach
Craig Smith took over.
Â
The junior captained the Runnin' Utes past then-No. 4 Arizona at home and nearly recorded a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists for his first-career double-double. Meanwhile, his 11 rebounds was a new career-high while holding Arizona's Kerr Kriisa to just four points on 1-of-9 shooting.
Â
Three days later on the Palouse, Worster went to work for Utah on both ends of the floor tying his career-high with 19 points on seven rebounds and four assists. The Missoula, Mont., first drained a deep 3-pointer to bring Utah within 58-56 in regulation before dishing out the game-tying assists to
Marco Anthony – who converted the and-1 opportunity to send the game into overtime (59-59).
Â
Worster was then a part of every winning play in the extra period. He first connected on a 3-point play thanks to a flopping call against Washington State on a drive before making the pass to
Gabe Madsen to put Utah ahead 65-59. After a rally by the Cougars to tie things up, 65-65, Worster gave Utah the go-ahead lead after knocking down a pair of free throws with 25 ticks remaining.
Â
He finished the weekend averaging 15.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting .478 from the field to go along with a 1.9 assist to turnover ratio.
Â
Utah will have a few days to rest up and prepare for its next stretch of games, starting with Jacksonville State on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. (MT). Drew Goodman will have the call on Pac-12 Networks while Casey Jacobsen serves as the analyst in the first meeting ever between the Runnin' Utes and Gamecocks.
