NORMAN, Okla. – The Utah men's golf team opened up play at the 2022 NCAA Norman Regional on Monday with three Utes currently in the top-5 as the team sits in a tie for third with No. 18 Auburn, shooting a combined 280 (-8). The Utes are just three shots off of the leader, No. 1 Oklahoma (277, -11), and two back of No. 24 South Carolina for second (278, -10).
"It was a good start to the tournament and I'm really pleased with how we played as a whole today. We played some of the holes extremely well, however we have room to improve on our par five play on the back nine" head coach
Garrett Clegg said. The next two days are supposed to be extremely windy so it will make the course play a lot tougher. We are excited to get back out there!"
The Utes took advantage of a pair of par fives on the front nine to gain some momentum in their round. On the 627-yard fifth, the squad combined to shoot 6-under as
Tristan Mandur played it best penciling an eagle on the hole. The eighth is another 600-yard par five that Mandur,
Blake Tomlinson and
Braxton Watts all recorded red numbers on.
Coming off a top-10 finish at the Pac-12 championships, Tomlinson's game continues to be at a high level posting a 69 (-3) in his opening regional round and is T-5th. Recording just a single bogey on the card today, Tomlinson was in the zone on the front tallying three birdies to make the turn at 3-under (33). His lone bogey came on the par four 10th and after getting that out of the way, went on to par the next six holes and found his final birdie on the 17th to shoot even par (36) on the back.
Mandur joined Tomlinson turning in a 69 (-3) to sit T-5th after the first 18. Mandur saw a strong start to his round penciling just one bogey while carding two birdies and an eagle on the front nine. Mandur took advantage of the par fives on the front, reaching the 627-yard fifth in two shots and knocking down the putt for the eagle. On the eighth hole, Mandur collected his second birdie of the day before a bogey on the ninth to make the turn at 3-under (33). Mandur played the back nine even par, pocketing his third and final birdie on the par four 11th before penciling a bogey three holes later. Four-straight pars ensued to close out his day.
Javier Barcos was the third Ute to record a first-round score of 69 (-3, T-5th). Barcos battled during his front nine, posting three birdies and two bogeys to head into the back nine 1-under (35). Barcos started the day with a birdie on the first and utilized the tailwind on the huge par five fifth for his second birdie. Penciling a bogey on the par four sixth, he bounced back with his third birdie of the opening nine. Barcos played a clean back nine, collecting his fourth and fifth birdies on the day.
Martín León had a roller coaster of a round in his NCAA Regional debut, carding five birdies to go along with six bogeys en route to posting a 1-over 73 in his opening 18 to sit T-30th. Leon started off the day bogeying the first and came back with two birdies over the next four holes. After a birdie on the fifth, Leon bogeyed the following hole and picked up his third birdie on the ninth to head into the back nine 1-under. Leon would go on to bogey four on the back with a pair of birdies to turn in a 38 (+2).
Watts also made his regional debut and played a solid front nine, collecting a pair of birdies with three bogeys to shoot 37 (+1) at the turn. Watts would scramble a bit on the back, bogeying the first two but would come back with two pars and a birdie. A double-bogey and bogey ensued as Watts would turn in a 40 (+4) on the back to post a 77 (+5, T-61st) in his opening round.
