LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Eight current members of the Utah Ski Team are headed back to the Beehive State fresh off of a week's worth of racing at the FISU World University Games, a 12-sport event featuring some of the world's top collegiate and university athletes.
For the Utes, alpine's
Madison Hoffman (Australia),
Jeremy Mathers (United States),
Katie Parker (Australia),
Claire Timmermann (Canada) and
Gustav Vøllo (Norway) all traveled to Lake Placid. From the Nordic team,
Karianne Dengerud (Norway),
Tom Mancini (France) and
Celine Mayer (Germany) each were in action. In addition to the current Utes, alpine alumna
Sona Moravcikova represented her native Slovakia.
Four podium appearances went to athletes with a Utah tie--Dengerud and Mancini had two apiece; Mancini also raced the anchor leg for the gold-medal-winning Team France in the 7.5K relay. It highlighted 13 different top-10 results for the Utah contingent across the alpine and cross-country events.
Traditionally, the World University Games are held every two years. However, this was the first Winter edition of the Games since 2019; the 2021 event in Switzerland was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2023 Games in Lake Placid were the first World University Games on American soil since 1993 and first Winter Games held in the U.S. since 1972.

RMISA Schedule Resumes This Week
Back home, the RMISA regular season schedule continues as the first alpine meet of the season begins Thursday. Utah will compete in the slalom-only Westminster Invitational, being hosted at Snowbird on January 26 and 27. Both days' first runs are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at Bryce's Run, with women's competition slated for Thursday and the men on Friday.
Start times are subject to change due to conditions and other factors; any updates to timing will be shared on the @utahskiteam social media accounts. Fans attending the meet are also encouraged to plan for possible traffic in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The Utah Transit Authority also runs its Ski Bus Route 994 up Little Cottonwood Canyon,
with a schedule available here.
It's a quick turnaround for the Utes following the Westminster Invitational, as teams head North to complete the Montana State Invitational on January 30-31. Both days at Bridger Bowl will be giant slalom competitions. Utah enters the alpine half of the MSU Invitational in the lead after two strong days of Nordic racing earlier this month.
Junior Worlds Update
Utah's
Oliver Parazette is in the final days of his trip to St. Anton, Austria, after Parazette was selected to the 17-athlete roster for Team USA at the FIS Alpine Junior World Championships. Parazette made his first Junior Worlds start on January 22 in giant slalom but was unable to finish on the first run.
The Jackson, Wyoming, native was part of a fifth-place U.S. squad in the team parallel event and will wrap Junior Worlds on January 25 with slalom.
