Amelia Van Der Werff led the team with six kills.
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Utah volleyball team battled No. 4 Washington State at Bohler Gym on Friday night, falling in straight sets (25-15, 25-21, 25-12).
This is the first time that the Utes played on the road against the fourth-ranked team in the nation since Dec. 1, 2018, at BYU in the NCAA Tournament. Over 2,700 fans attended Friday's match at Bohler Gym between the Utes and the Cougars, the third-most all season for Washington State.
Middle blocker Allie Olsen connected on five kills while only recording one error to capture a hitting percentage of .400 while Amelia Van Der Werff led the team in kills for the second time this season, totaling six. Emrie Satuala added four kills with no errors, finishing with a .444 hitting percentage.
Running the offense, Viktoria Wahlgren tallied 19 assists. Defensively, Vanessa Ramirez led the team with eight digs.
The first set began with the hot hand of Amelia Van Der Werff as the junior scored the first three Utah points. Neither team held more than a one-point lead early on until the Cougars used a five-point run to lead 8-4. Utah responded with a pair of points as a kill from Kamry Bailey and Kamryn Gibadlo cut the deficit to two points. Washington State would be too much to contain as two additional five-point stretches would contribute to a first-set victory.
The Cougars used their first set momentum to jump out to an early lead, 6-2. The Utes would use a three-point run to fight the tough atmosphere and tie the game 7-7. Rianne Vos added a pair of service aces to give Utah their first lead 13-12. The Cougars took a firm grasp of the set, jumping out to their largest lead of the set, 22-16. The Utes discarded three set points with kills from Allie Olsen and Kamryn Gibadlo but Washington State used its fifth set-point to secure the set.
Utah held a slight edge to begin the third set, holding a one-point lead. The Cougars answered with a 5-2 run to capture a 7-4 advantage. The Utes would side out as Lauren Jardine added her first kill of the match and an attack error from Washington State would close the deficit to just one point, 7-6. The Cougars would respond with an 18-6 run to close out the match.
The Utes close out the weekend with a trip to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies at Alaska Airlines Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. The match will be broadcast on Pac-12 Washington.
