Hogue piloted the Utes to their first Women’s College World Series appearance since 1994
SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah Softball Head Coach Amy Hogue has been named the 2022-23 recipient of the Don Reddish Award, Utah Athletics announced on Tuesday. Hogue will receive the award at halftime of Utah football's Nov. 25 game against Colorado.
Named in honor of the legendary former Utah swimming & diving head coach, the Reddish Award is presented annually to the leader of an Olympic sport at the U deemed to have had the most successful season. This will be the second time Hogue has been so honored, with the first instance coming after the 2015 season.
"This award is very, very special," said Hogue. "I began my time at Utah as a student-athlete in 1990, the year Don retired. He set the bar high for everyone at Utah, especially the coaches. His tireless efforts were evident with the accolades he had. Everyone should take the time to read about Don and his legacy at Utah. It is a great honor to receive the award that bears his name."
Hogue spent 2023 guiding Utah softball to one of the best seasons in the program's history. The Utes captured the first-ever Pac-12 Tournament title, earned a berth in the Women's College World Series for the first time since 1994 and piled up 42 victories, the fourth-highest total in school history to go with their third-best win percentage ever. These accomplishments helped the Utes earn the No. 7 spot in the year's final top 25 poll, the highest ranking the program has ever achieved.
The list of new benchmarks reached by Utah in 2023 also included recording 15 victories in Pac-12 competition, the most by the Utes since joining the conference, sweeping a series from a team ranked in the top 5 nationally for the first time and having eight student-athletes selected for the all-conference roster, the most ever for a Utah softball squad. Two of those honorees, Mariah Lopez and Ellessa Bonstrom, earned the title of All-American as well, with Lopez taking home the Pac-12 Tournament's Most Outstanding Player award and Bonstrom receiving the Tom Hansen Conference Medal as Utah's outstanding senior female student-athlete.
Hogue and her staff received multiple awards for their efforts, including being named D1Softball's Coaching Staff of the Year, as well as the ATEC/NFCA Pacific Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Hogue also picked up the 600th win of her coaching career and her 400th victory at Utah during the 2023 campaign.
Reddish, the award's namesake, served as Utah's head swimming & diving coach for 37 years, capturing 19 conference titles and compiling a dual meet record of 267-84-6 (.701). He coached championship teams in every decade from the 1940s to the '90s, coaching continuously except for his two years served in the Korean War. After retiring from coaching, he served as an assistant athletics director at the U for several more years.
