SALT LAKE CITY – Fueled by a 20-point second-half performance from
Gabe Madsen, the #RV/RV Utah men's basketball pulled away to a resounding 80-58 victory over Washington State inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center Friday night in its Pac-12 opener.
The 22-point margin of victory was Utah's third-largest behind a pair of 41-point victories in 2016 and 2017 – both were by a score of 88-47.
Utah (10-2, 1-0 Pac-12) struck first against Washington State, jumping out to an 8-1 lead after a thunderous dunk from
Keba Keita got the crowd going. Both teams would exchange baskets at the midway point of the first half before WSU began to start its run.
The Cougars (9-3, 0-1 Pac-12) cut the Utah lead down to 24-23 heading into the 3:50 media break after hitting 5-of-7 to just 1-of-7 by the Utes. That 13-2 run was capped off by a lob out of the break for WSU to take its first lead of the game, 25-24, but was short-lived as
Rollie Worster found
Branden Carlson the and-1 to back up 27-25. After the Cougars tied things up on the ensuing possession, Carlson found Keita for a huge two-handed jam that forced a WSU timeout with 2:03 left to go.
Utah had a tough time finding its rhythm down the stretch of the first-half, hitting just 3-of-11 from the floor in the final 5:00 minutes of the play, but was able to hang on to a 31-29 edge heading into the locker room against the Cougars. Keita kept the Utes afloat in the first half with 10 points and 4 rebounds on 4-of-5 shooting.
After a short back-and-forth to start the frame, a 7-0 spurt by the Cougars forced a Utah timeout at the 16:03 mark after putting the Utes behind 40-34.
That timeout was what the Runnin' Utes needed as it went on a 14-4 run against the Cougars fueled by a trio of 3-pointers from Madsen to give Utah the 48-44 lead with 11:44 remaining. Madsen tacked on five more points on his own after that to make it 53-44 before the Utes ran away with the game.
Madsen's 20 points was good for a game-high while Carlson stuff the stats sheet with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks. Keita closed out the night with a double-double, posting 18 points and 11 rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting with 3 blocks. Floor general
Rollie Worster finished with 11 points and 7 assists on an efficient 5-of-8 shooting.
