SAN DIEGO –
Karlie Davison blasted two homers, drove in seven runs and the University of Utah softball team broke the program record for steals in a game with 10 in their 7-0 triumph over the UCSD Tritons, which came after the Utes started Saturday with an 8-0 win over the Northern Colorado Bears on day two of the La Jolla Invitational at the Triton Softball Field.
The Utes 10 swipes tops a mark that was just under a year old, as the squad stole nine bags on Feb. 13, 2022 against Cal Baptist.
"Quite a few highlights on the day," said head coach
Amy Hogue, "but I have to start with
Karlie Davison. She had a phenomenal day at the plate with a couple home runs, seven RBIs and was perfect on defense at shortstop. Our pitching was on point for both games and we ran the bases like we know how, with a record setting number of stolen bases.
"We came here with our eyes on a sweep for the weekend, so we certainly haven't finished what we came here to do. We are focused on the game in the morning and nothing else."
These victories push Utah's record to 4-0, the third time in the last four seasons they've opened the year with four straight wins.
Game One: Utah vs. Northern Colorado
For the second straight day,
Mariah Lopez was nearly untouchable and didn't allow single runner to reach scoring position. An infield hit in the third and a single to center in the sixth was all UNC could muster against the junior left-hander in 5 1/3 innings. Lopez also didn't walk a batter and struck out eight, matching her total from her first outing. Her 16 strikeouts are the most she's ever had across her first two starts of a season.
After a scoreless first inning, the Utah offense erupted for seven runs in the second to blow the game to open. A single and a walk got the frame started and brought up Davison, who launched a three-run homer to dead center for the game's first lead. Four batters later,
Kaylah Nelsen came up with two on and one out and plugged the gap in left-center with an RBI double to make the score 4-0. The inning's final three runs came across on run-scoring singles courtesy of
Aliya Belarde and
Hailee White sandwiched around an
Ellessa Bonstrom sacrifice fly.
Lopez and
Halle Morris, who entered in relief in the sixth, kept a firm grasp on their side's 7-0 lead and the Utes found the run they needed to end the game in bottom of the sixth. Two hits and an intentional walk loaded the bases for
Julia Jimenez, who hit a grounder to second that couldn't be handled by UNC's Paola Villegas and that error allowed the winning run to score.
Game Two: Utah vs. UCSD
Haley Denning got her team's record-breaking night started by reaching on an error to lead-off the game and stealing second. Two batters later, when Bonstrom grounded out, Denning scored the game's first run.
In the third, the Utah running game went back to work when Belarde singled, swiped second and took third on a single by Bonstrom, who also stole second. An RBI knock by Davison followed to make the score 2-0. One frame later, it was
Shelbi Ortiz on the basepaths, pinch-running after a Nelsen single. Ortiz took second and third, putting her in position to score on
Chloe Doyle fielder's choice.
The Utes blew the game open with three runs in the fifth and again it started with Denning reaching base, this time with a lead-off hit, then pilfering second. The senior outfielder scored on a Jimenez double and Davison made the score 6-0 with a rocket over the wall in left-center for her second round-tripper of the day. Davison would add one more RBI to her tally on a seventh-inning safety.
That seven-run margin was more than enough for starting pitcher
Sydney Sandez, who twirled six shutout innings in which the Tritons could only collect four hits. Sandez retired the side in order in the second and fifth frames, didn't walk a batter and struck out two. She also benefited from a double play turned by Belarde and Davison to end the fourth. Morris ended the evening with a spotless seventh.
