SAN FRANCISCO – A pair of Red Rocks picked up Pac-12 weekly awards on Tuesday as
Maile O'Keefe won her second-straight Pac-12 Specialist of the Week honor and
Makenna Smith earned the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week nod.
The awards mark the third and fourth selections by a Utah gymnast this season. O'Keefe has now won 11 Pac-12 weekly awards in her career and two this season, while the freshman of the week award marks Smith's first selection of her young career.
O'Keefe posted her second consecutive 10.0 on beam last weekend at the Metroplex Challenge, improving her career total to six Perfect 10s on beam to tie the school record held by Theresa Kulikowski (1999-2003). The senior from Las Vegas has two 10s on beam this season, and is one more away from matching her own single-season school record.
With her 10.0 on beam at the Metroplex Challenge, O'Keefe has now won the beam title in all but one competition this season and has not scored below a 9.95. In addition to her outstanding performance on beam, O'Keefe also posted a 9.925 on bars to finish second overall at the competition. She has seven wins this season and has hit 15-15 routines.
Smith was a last minute add to the bars and beam lineup at the Metroplex Challenge, which put her in the all-around for the first time of her career. In her first-ever competition as a Ute all-arounder, Smith won the title with a 39.400. She posted a career-high 9.90 on bars and tied for the highest score on floor with a career-high 9.90.
The Ute freshman from Albuquerque, N.M., scored a 9.80 on vault, which tied for the second-best score by a Ute, and scored a 9.80 on her Ute debut on beam. Smith is only the second Ute to compete in the all-around this season and has hit 18-18 routines this season, which is the second most hits on the team behind all-arounder
Grace McCallum.
Smith, O'Keefe, and the fourth-ranked Red Rocks continue conference play this Monday, Feb. 20, at #20 Arizona State. The Utes and Sun Devils compete at 1 p.m. MT at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Ariz. The meet will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
