SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team did its best to send its seniors out with a win, but couldn't get past the hump in the second half as it fell to USC 62-49 Saturday night inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
First-half action saw the visiting Trojans go ahead early, 13-4, thanks to its three-point shooting. The Utes (17-13, 10-9 Pac-12) did their best to keep within striking distance of the Trojans and got within 22-18 to force a USC timeout with 7:13 left in the frame.
The Trojans answered out of the break and went with a 6-0 run to force a Utah timeout before heading into the locker room down 34-28. Like Thursday, turnovers were the Achilles heel for Utah as it saw the Trojans turn six miscues into a 11-0 edge in points off turnovers.
Utah kept within striking distance of the Trojans (21-8, 13-5 Pac-12) for a majority of the second half, before a scoring drought doomed the Utes in the final 5:52 of the game. Utah had opportunities all game, pulling down 17 offensive rebounds but was only able to muster a 6-2 edge in second-chance points in its loss.
Marco Anthony finished with a team-high 11 points while
Branden Carlson picked up 10th-career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
