SAN FRANCISCO – University of Utah gymnast
Maile O'Keefe has been named the Pac-12 Specialist of the week after earning two event titles against UCLA last weekend, which included her fifth career Perfect 10 on beam. The honor is O'Keefe's first weekly award this season.
O'Keefe won the beam and bars titles, while finishing in second place on floor to round out her dominant night against then fifth-ranked UCLA in the 198.200-197.450 win for Utah. O'Keefe contributed to Utah's first 198-plus of the season with a 10.0 on beam, which pushed Utah to a 49.775 in the rotation to match the program record set in 2020. She has not scored below a 9.95 on beam this season and with the perfect score, she is averaging a nation-best 9.970 on beam. O'Keefe is second all-time with five career 10.0s on beam and is now only one 10.0 on beam shy of tying the program record set by Theresa Kulikowski (1999-2003).
The Las Vegas native also matched a season-high 9.95 on bars to win a share of the title, while she added a season-best 9.925 on floor to finish tied for second overall. Her bars, beam, and floor scores all contributed to event season highs for Utah. She has now hit 13-13 routines this season and 145-146 career routines. With the two event titles last weekend, she now has six wins this season and 51 career wins.
O'Keefe joins teammate
Kara Eaker as Pac-12 Specialists of the Week so far this season. Overall, it marks O'Keefe's 10th weekly award from the conference as she is a six-time Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week, two-time Specialist of the Week, and two-time Freshman of the Week.
O'Keefe and the fourth-ranked Red Rocks compete at the Metroplex Challenge this weekend, taking on #18 Georgia, #22 Illinois and Illinois State in the afternoon session. The quad meet will begin at 1:30 p.m. MT at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
