SALT LAKE CITY – Twice on Sunday, the University of Utah softball team was down to its last three outs and they responded with comebacks both times before
Ellessa Bonstrom's two-run, walk-off double in the 10th inning propelled the Utes past the Oregon State Beavers, 6-5, in the Pac-12 Conference series finale at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
Utah has now rattled off 10 straight wins for the first time since 2017 and their overall record stands at 19-4 with a conference mark of 3-0. This is also the first time since 2017 the Utes have started league play with a sweep. OSU is 9-14 and 0-3 in conference competition.
The Utes' next contest was originally scheduled to take place at home on Tuesday against North Dakota State, but that game has been canceled.
"This was a great team win," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "So many players impacted this game and helped us win. The grit that showed up every time they scored and our backs were against the wall was so impressive. Belarde was so impressive at the plate today and both [Jimenez] and [Bonstrom] came up with huge RBIs.
"I was most impressed with Sarah [Ladd] today. She led us and held that team for six solid innings and put us in position to win. I couldn't have been happier with her performance today."
Through five innings, both teams had managed only a single run before a
Julia Jimenez RBI single put the Utes in front heading into the top of the seventh. Unfortunately for the home team, they watched that lead slip away on a two-out, two-run double followed by an RBI single that provided the Beavers with a 4-2 edge.
The Utes immediately bounced back with a come-from-behind rally of their own, keyed by a trio of walks drawn by
Kaylah Nelsen,
Emily Capobianco and
Karlie Davison, with the final pitch of Davison's at-bat being a wild pitch that tallied the run that brought the Utes within one.
Haley Denning then hit a line drive that was caught for the second out, but, in trying to double Davison off second, shortstop Grace Messmer's throw was off target, allowing
Jordyn Gasper to score with the tying run and sending the contest to extra innings.
Neither side could break the deadlock until the 10
th, when Frankie Hammoude's solo shot nudged OSU back ahead, but Utah would not let that lead stand up. Denning reached on an error to start the bottom of the frame and a base hit through the right side from
Aliya Belarde put runners on second and third with nobody out. When Bonstrom sliced a 1-2 pitch into left-center, both runners scored easily to secure the sweep for Utah.
