The First Pitch: Things to Know
The home portion of the Pac-12 Conference schedule begins this weekend for the Utah baseball team as the Utes welcome Arizona State for a three-game series.
- Due to field conditions at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City, Friday's series opener between Utah and ASU was moved to Miller Park in Provo. Please note, admission is free for Friday's game.
- Utah is looking to bounce back from a tough 7-0 setback at the hands of BYU on Tuesday night. TJ Clarkson singled in the sixth inning, but that was all the Utes could muster in the hit column in the loss.
- A combination of timely hitting and effective pitching were key in the Utes' 3-0 victory last Sunday to close the three-game series at Washington. Freshman right-hander Merit Jones went six-plus innings in the start with four strikeouts and five hits allowed. All told from Jones, Bryson Van Sickle, Zac McCleve and Micah Ashman, the pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts and did not walk a single Husky batter all day.
- Jayden Kiernan, who played first base during the Washington series, had his first double of the season in the finale at Husky Ballpark, logging a 2-for-4 day and his third multi-hit game of the season. TJ Clarkson clubbed his team-leading sixth home run of the season, which also ranks second in the Pac-12 behind USC's Cole Gabrielson (7).
- Clarkson heads into the weekend on a team-leading 12-game reached base streak. He ranks second on the team with a .286 batting average across all of Utah's 16 games.
- Perhaps one of the more memorable two-way performances in Utah history was orchestrated by Clarkson, who not only pitched 2.2 innings in a Feb. 27 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, he also hit two home runs and had five RBI while pitching.
- The Utah bullpen boasts a solid variety of talent, tallying 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings. Southpaw Micah Ashman (1.50 ERA) has four saves, tied for second in the Pac-12 and leading all lefties. Right-hander and submariner Zac McCleve has one save this season and 10 in his Utah career, placing fourth in the program record book.
- Among the rookies to come on the scene for Utah has been freshman Cameron Gurney, currently with a team-best .306 batting average. Gurney has caught seven games behind the plate, held the DH and first base roles in one game each, and played third base in four straight contests.
