HONOLULU, Hawaii –
Sydney Sandez,
Sarah Ladd and
Halle Morris combined to no-hit the Niagara Purple Eagles in a 10-0 triumph and the University of Utah softball team followed that by dropping the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine 6-2 on Monday on the final day of the Hawaii Spring Fling at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Utah's record now stands at 16-4 and they've won seven straight. That record represents their best 20 game start since they also won 16 of their first 20 in 2017.
"The combined no hitter to start the day today was excellent!" said head coach
Amy Hogue. "Syd then Sarah then Halle was the plan before the first pitch and everything went as planned. We made a few mistakes defensively in game two but we had the run support we needed to get the job done anyway.
"Bonstrom hit great today and Chloe got some key RBI's for us as well. This was a very important weekend sweep for us. We head into conference play next weekend with a nice win streak going and a level of confidence I haven't seen in the last few years."
Game One: Utah vs. Niagara
Sandez took her place in the circle first and the only base runners who reached against her got on via a walk and an error. Thanks to a caught stealing in the first, Sandez would face only one batter over the minimum in her two frames and she struck out three.
Sarah Ladd took over in the third and put together back-to-back perfect innings, picking up a strikeout in the third and lowering her ERA for the season to 0.89. Morris then completed the masterpiece with a 1-2-3 fifth and the Utes has their first no-no since 2017.
For the 10
th straight game, the Utes put up runs in the first inning and this instance took the form of a five-run rally. A single, a hit batter and a walk packed the sacks with one out and
Sophie Jacquez's base hit to left plated the first run.
Aliya Belarde scurried home one batter later to make the score 2-0 and
Chloe Doyle then struck the biggest blow, lacing a three-run double to left-center to put Utah up by five.
Doyle picked up her fourth RBI of the contest with an RBI knock in the third before the Utes went off for four more runs in the fourth. The first half of that uprising came courtesy of
Ellessa Bonstrom's first four-bagger and Utah soon had two more on with two out for
Jordyn Gasper. The senior closed out the game one scoring by dropping a two-run triple in right to put Utah's advantage at 10-0. The pitching staff did the rest.
Game Two: Utah vs. Hawaii
It was the Rainbow Wahine who struck first in the Utes' second contest of the day, thanks to a solo shot by Mya'Liah Bethea. That lead held until the fifth, when Utah's offense went to work and moved in front for good. With two on and nobody out, Gasper drove an 0-2 pitch to right for a run-scoring double. Four batters later, with runners on second and third, an infield hit from
Haley Denning combined with an error tallied two more Utes and when
Aliya Belarde beat out an infield hit, Denning scored to make the score 5-1.
Ellessa Bonstrom clouted her second dinger of the day in the sixth to increase the visitors' lead to 6-1, but Utah's hurlers already had all the run support they needed.
Mariah Lopez was handed the ball to start and she held the Rainbow Wahine without an extra base hit after the Bethea homer. She also struck out seven over four innings to improve to 6-2.
Sandez was responsible for the final nine outs and permitted only one safety in recording them. She combined those numbers with three strikeouts and by throwing the last three frames, snagging her first save of the season.
