PROVO, Utah –
Mariah Lopez allowed one unearned run in 6 2/3 innings and the No. 18 University of Utah softball team strung together a six-run sixth inning rally before holding on for a 6-4 victory over the BYU Cougars on Monday evening at Gail Miller Field.
The Utes have now won three of their last four and their record stands at 25-8, while BYU falls to 20-10.
"It took us a bit to get the bats going today, but I liked how we were ready for their second pitcher and kept that rally going in the 6th," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "We needed every one of those runs, so the pinch hit RBI [single] by Kaylah [Nelsen] was big and the two-out, two-RBI hit by Denning was huge.
"But today was really about
Mariah Lopez. She was practically untouchable. It's one of the best games I've seen her throw this year. She was having fun out there today. She's been working hard for a day like that to happen so I was so happy for her."
For the first five frames, this contest was a pitcher's duel and only the home team could get on the scoreboard. They used an pair of infield hits sandwiched around an error to plate the game's first run and slide in front, 1-0, in the third.
During those five innings, the Utes were unable to solve BYU's Kaysen Korth, but Lopez made sure BYU's lead stayed at just a single run. She worked out of trouble in the second after the Cougars put their first two runners on, then fired perfect frames in the fourth and fifth before the Utah lineup found its footing in the sixth.
The uprising that led to all six Ute runs began with a single and a walk to bring
Julia Jimenez to the plate and Utah's third baseman cracked an RBI double into right-center that tied the score and the Utes took their first lead one batter later on a BYU error.
Abby Dayton and
Kaylah Nelsen kept the rally rolling with consecutive RBI singles and, three batters later,
Haley Denning slapped a two-run knock into right and the visitors had a 6-1 lead.
That advantage remained intact heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Cougars refused to go quietly, pulling to within two on a three-run homer and bringing the tying run to the plate with one out. That's when Lopez returned to the mound and silenced the Cougars' bats one more time, inducing a pair of fly outs to seal a Utah victory. Lopez held the opposition to just three singles on the night while recording eight strikeouts and retiring 12 of the final 14 batters she faced.
