Utah’s center fielder selected after going 7-for-8 last week
SAN FRANCISCO – For the second time in 2023, Utah softball's Abby Dayton has been named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
Dayton was on-base all weekend as the Utes took two of three from Arizona State. She went 7-for-8 at the plate with an .889 on-base percentage, starting the series by scoring two runs and stealing a base in Friday's opener. When the teams played twice on Saturday, Dayton went 7-for-7, knocked in three runs, scored twice and swiped another bag. Her biggest hit was a two-run single in the second inning that ignited a seven-run Utah rally in game two and helped lead the team to an 8-6 triumph.
Dayton is the third Ute to receive multiple freshman of the week awards in a single season and the first since Ally Dickman in 2016. Katie Donovan accomplished this feat as well, doing so in 2015.
Dayton is the second Ute to receive multiple weekly honors from the Pac-12 during the current campaign, as Ellessa Bonstrom has two player of the week awards to her credit. Mariah Lopez has also been recognized with a weekly honor, earning the title of Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week on February 14.
