The First Pitch: Things to Know
Utah baseball is back home this weekend for a three-game Pac-12 Conference series against California, running from Friday through Sunday, April 14-16. First pitch in the three games is slated for 6 p.m., 2 p.m. and Noon MT at Smith's Ballpark.
- Utah's Live Stream will broadcast all three contests, while Bill Riley has the radio call on ESPN 92.1 FM (all three games) and 700 AM (Friday and Sunday only).
- The Utes split a midweek home-and-home with Utah Valley on Monday and Tuesday, rallying from a 6-2 deficit on Monday to take the first contest in Salt Lake City by a 10-8 score. But Tuesday's trip down to Orem saw the Wolverines break a 5-5 tie in the eighth inning and ultimately hang on for a 6-5 final score.
- The bullpen is owed credit for Monday's win, highlighted by three innings of one-run ball each for Ernesto Lugo-Canchola and Cam Day. Lugo-Canchola logged four strikeouts in relief of starter Jaden Harris, while Day fanned three batters against just one hit and one walk in his outing.
- Then, Zac McCleve came on for the ninth inning to seal the 11th save of his Utah career; it ranks fourth-most all-time in recorded program history and is one away from tying Robert Chimpky (2008-09) for third with 12.
- Outfielder Karson Bodily was 5-for-5 at the plate during the two games vs. UVU. Three of Bodily's hits went for extra bases including Bodily's first career home run during the Monday matchup.
- Utah is looking for its first win over the Golden Bears since 2021, knocking off Cal by an 11-4 score in that year's series finale. A series victory for the Utes this weekend would be the first over the club from Berkeley since 2017 here in Salt Lake City.
- Davis Cop was 6-for-12 in last year's series in Berkeley with a double and a home run, while Dakota Duffalo also contributed four hits over the three-game set.
- It'll be back to the road for Utah after this weekend's series; the club does not return to Smith's until April 28-30 for a trio with Washington State. In the meantime, the Utes will travel to BYU (April 18), Arizona (April 21-23) and Utah Tech (April 25).
Checking the Numbers
- Defensively, Utah has turned more double plays (27) than any other Pac-12 team entering this weekend. The Utes rank No. 38 nationally in this category.
- The Utah pitching staff enters the Cal series allowing 3.71 walks per nine innings. That stands No. 41 in the country of nearly 300 ranked teams.
- Utah's 37 stolen bases on the season are the third-most in the Pac-12 (Cal leads with 43) and surpassed the team's total of 31 during the 2022 season.
- During the UVU game on Monday, Zac McCleve sealed the 11th save of his Utah career; it ranks fourth-most all-time in recorded program history and is one away from tying Robert Chimpky (2008-09) for third with 12.
- TJ Clarkson's eight home runs are tied for fourth-most in the Pac-12, and are three from matching Clarkson's long ball total from last season (11). Clarkson eclipsed 100 career hits during the Stanford series; it helped him run up an on-base streak to 20 games. It came after Clarkson ran up a streak of 38 straight games last season.
- Cameron Gurney made it all the way to Friday, March 17, before being retired by strikeout for the first time. It ended a streak of his first 49 collegiate at bats without a 'K', at the time making Gurney the nation's toughest freshman to strikeout.
- In Jayden Kiernan's last eight games played (going back to the start of the Stanford series), Kiernan is batting .484 with three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. He has been the leadoff hitter in 13 different innings in that span and reached base eight times. He has reached base safely in 13 consecutive games played, the longest active streak on the team.
- Six-foot-seven lefty Micah Ashman earned his fifth save on March 21 vs. Northern Colorado. It is tied for third in the Pac-12.
- Landon Frei needs three hits to eclipse 100 in his Utah career.
