Kiernan extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games
Utah will put this one in the rearview mirror and conclude its series with Arizona in a 1 p.m. MDT game (noon locally in Tucson) on Sunday.
The Utes had five hits on the night and the club's two runs both came in the ninth inning. Davis Cop had a sacrifice fly that scored Kaden Carpenter and Landon Frei contributed an RBI single that plated Jayden Kiernan.
Back in the second inning, Utah was primed to break what was then a scoreless tie with runners at second and third and just one out. But on an ensuring ground ball, the Utes had a runner caught off base in what turned into an inning-ending double play.
From there, the Arizona bats rattled off a six-spot in the second inning, scored nine runs in the third and four more in the home half of the fourth inning. It included two grand slams along the way.
Starter Merit Jones received the loss for Utah. Out of the bullpen, Bransen Kuehl had a pair of strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work, then Garrison Sumner came on in the eighth for his third appearance as a Ute and worked a 1-2-3 frame with a strikeout.
