SALT LAKE CITY – Despite grabbing an early lead, the No. 16 University of Utah softball team ended up on the short end of an 11-3 decision against the No. 2 UCLA Bruins on Sunday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at the Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
Utah now owns a record of 31-13 and a 12-9 Pac-12 mark.
"The outcome of the games this weekend wasn't what we were looking for," said head coach
Amy Hogue, "but if there was learning and growing along the way, then it was worth something. Each of us has an opportunity every single day out on the field to get better. Even when we lose we have an opportunity to be preparing for what is next. We have a lot of big games in front of us and all of them need to be an absolute dog fight."
A lead-off homer from UCLA's Megan Grant got the visitors on the board first, but the Utes quickly supplied in answer in their half of the first.
Ellessa Bonstrom reached on a one-out single, then raced all the way to the plate on a
Julia Jimenez single that was combined with a UCLA error. Up next was
Sophie Jacquez and she stroked a double into left to plate Jimenez for a 2-1 Utah lead.
Mariah Lopez made sure that lead stood up over the next two frames, stranding the bases loaded in the third, but a pair of Utah errors led to three Bruin runs in the fourth and they added another in the fifth.
Bonstrom got one run back for the home team in the fifth with an RBI double, but the Bruins continued to tack on, putting together three-run rallies on the sixth and seventh. Megan Faraimo kept Utah off the board in the final two innings to earn the win.
