Utes bang out 13 hits in 12-3 romp
The Utes improved their conference mark to 7-3 and they are 23-7 overall. The Sun Devils dropped to 4-6 in league play and 20-12 for the season.
After originally planning to play two games on Friday, Utah and ASU will now conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday that will begin at 9 a.m.
"I was really happy with the way that they came out at the beginning of the game today," said head coach Amy Hogue. "We struggled with the second pitcher for just a little bit and then had another big inning to seal the deal. It was nice to play at home and have our offense come alive like that."
The Utes didn't waste any time seizing the initiative, loading the bases with one out in the first before Sophie Jacquez laced a single into left-center to bring in the game's first two runs. Julia Jimenez upped her team's lead to 3-0 by scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI triple from Shelbi Ortiz tacked on a fourth run. Kendall Lundberg capped the rally with a two-run single and the Utes led 6-0 after one.
The Sun Devils battled back by getting on the scoreboard with a single run in the third and added another in the fourth before loading the bases with only one out. That's when Sarah Ladd entered in relief and ruined any ASU comeback hopes. She retired the next two hitters to end the Sun Devils' rally and recorded all three outs in the fifth to pick up her second save.
"Sarah Ladd was a highlight for me today as well," said Hogue. "She has been preparing for an opportunity like that and was absolutely fantastic."
Utah's offense made sure the fifth would the final inning of the evening by putting up another six-spot in the bottom of the fourth. After the Utes put their first three hitters on, Bonstrom cleared the bases by slicing a double into left and she tallied her team's 10th run on a pinch-hit knock courtesy of Elicia Espinosa. Lundberg struck the final blow of the night with a two-run double to left-center to close out the scoring.
