The First Pitch: Things to Know
After back-to-back weekend Pac-12 series against the Los Angeles schools, the Utah baseball team takes a quick break from league play for a home-and-home against in-state foe Utah Valley. The teams will cross on Monday at Smith's Ballpark at 6 p.m. MT, before heading down to Orem on Tuesday for a 6:05 p.m. MT rematch at UCCU Ballpark.
- Utah is back home on the heels of a three-game series with No. 23 UCLA out at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Utes fell 5-3 in the series opener, dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker in a middle game that went 12 innings, then battled the Bruins to a 10-10 tie in Saturday's series finale. It was another extra-inning contest that went 11 frames and gave Utah its first back-to-back extra-inning games since 2012.
- Saturday's game was called after 11 innings due to reaching a predetermined time of day. The cutoff time was established in advance around Utah's return flight from LAX to Salt Lake City.
- Second baseman Bruer Webster had four hits in the UCLA series, made several highlight defensive plays and also logged two stolen bases in Friday's game. Both Zac McCleve and Micah Ashman pitched out of the bullpen in the final two games as the Utes continued into extras.
- In Game 2 at UCLA, both teams had chances to break the scoreless tie down the stretch, including Utah putting men in scoring position in the ninth, 11th and 12th innings. But for every time a runner would get in scoring position, just as quickly the other side would counter with a strikeout or nice defensive play to get out unharmed.
- Then on Saturday, the Utes and Bruins had five lead changes in a back-and-forth ballgame at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
- The Utes split two meetings with UVU during the 2022 season with the home team claiming each game. TJ Clarkson was 3-for-6 across the two games with a pair of solo home runs, while Zac McCleve picked up the win in the home game for Utah.
- Following the home-and-home the Utes will get ready for a three-game series against California from Friday through Sunday at Smith's Ballpark.
Checking the Numbers
- The Utah pitching staff entered the UCLA series allowing 3.63 walks per nine innings. That stands No. 36 in the country of nearly 300 ranked teams.
- Utah enters the UVU series with 35 stolen bases on the season; it trails only Cal and USC (38 each) for the Pac-12 lead and surpasses the team's total of 31 bags swiped during the 2022 season.
- Cameron Gurney made it all the way to Friday, March 17, before being retired by strikeout for the first time. It ended a streak of his first 49 collegiate at bats without a 'K', and puts Gurney as the nation's top freshman when it comes to toughest players to strike out (with only six strikeouts on the season, he averages one every 13.8 at bats). He leads all players in the Pac-12 and ranks No. 19 of all players nationally.
- TJ Clarkson's eight home runs rank third in the Pac-12, and are three from matching Clarkson's long ball total from last season (11). Clarkson eclipsed 100 career hits during the Stanford series; it helped him run up an on-base streak to 20 games. It came after Clarkson ran up a streak of 38 straight games last season.
- In Jayden Kiernan's last eight games played (going back to the start of the Stanford series), Kiernan is batting .484 with three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. He has been the leadoff hitter in 13 different innings in that span and reached base eight times. He has reached base safely in 13 consecutive games, a team-best.
- Six-foot-seven lefty Micah Ashman earned his fifth save on March 21 vs. Northern Colorado. It is tied for the Pac-12 lead and No. 32 nationally.
- Landon Frei is not far behind Clarkson for the 100-hit milestone, sitting at 96 in his Utah career entering the UVU series.
